Question for the Older folks on here.

I have been around another 25 years.
I can remember many extended rain periods but not so early in the year.
Also the extremities of weather. Hard to think that 5 months ago a hosepipe ban was in effect in SE England.
Not been around long enough to see the Thames freeze over and can just barely remember the last Bonspeil [Grand Match]. Mind you they should have had one last year but the polis and Cooncil took fright.

1979 was the last time a Bonspiel was held at Lake of Menteith, so not that long ago. A lot of us were disappointed with the H&S Jobsworths last year.

I am 40 and have NEVER seen as much rain in my lifetime fall as I have this year, Has the older folk experienced rain like this before ?

I have been around almost another 20 years than yourself and I don't recollect a similiar period of extended wet weather conditions...

I've been around nearly 15 years longer than that and - what was the question again?

25 years longer than me? You really are old.

I can remember when I was about 8, must have been late 60's, it rained non stop for what seemed weeks . My father was a pilot, and the only way he could get to work, avoiding all the flooding, was for a helicopter to come and pick him up. This was when we lived in Wokingham, not a normally a flood prone area. There were some great pictures in the daily papers. Fortunately all the local schools were closed !

What rain? It's been hot and sunny in Dorset for weeks!

Sun shines on the righteous eh ;)

Been around for 46 years and can't remember rain like it. The rumours are that it is suppose to be a really bad winter too and judging by the abundance of berries on the bushes alone they could be right. The problem of course is the water basin is so high there is nowhere for the water to go. I wonder what will happen if we continue to have this level of rain and then heavy snowfall. I am worried we will see a lot of communities and businesses in real trouble early in 2013

In Bucks we still have reservoirs that are half full because we are dependent on deep ground water springs and the aquifers have not yet refilled, In Chesham there is only just a trickle of water in the River Chess as it passes through the town centre, it gets boosted by springwater further down the valley towards Latimer.

The problem is that when it rains, so much water runs off hard standing surfaces that comparatively very little gets absorbed into the ground, the streams and rivers, get filled up, but this water isnt harvested, it just flows out to sea and is lost.

But there are some places who have different geology and if their water tables are full, they will have problems

We've always had lots of rain but what I don't remember is these God-Almighty cloudbursts that last about 10 minutes, dump a million gallons of rain on you and then revert to "normal" rain.
We didn't get that sort of stuff when I was a kid - or if we did it was rare.....
