Qualifiers over the winter or Lack of.....

We've never had winter qualifiers, not sure why as the course generally holds up well and the only winter chance is teeing mats on par 3s - which are the same distance from the green....
They tried to introduce winter qualifiers a couple of years ago but a combination of weather and lack of numbers knocked that on the head.
So now we have a winter league, best 5 cards from 20 between 1\11 and 30\3..
Keeps the competitive juices flowing and, certainly for me, gives a headstart when the qualifiers start again in April...

My club in Hertfordshire has qualifiers all year round, although we may lose one or two due to weather conditions. Ditto my previous club in Buckinghamshire. :)

Nairn used to play qualifiers all though the winter on the full course up until about 10 years ago.... no one knows why we stopped

It's a bit strange that you don't, I'd assume the course is playable year round?

yep, drains very well. only real problem is hard frost.

The short winter course suites lots of the older members, some of them play more in the winter than the summer.

They did build some winter tee's a while ago that made the course just short of the yellows length, The head green keeper didn't like them so most have never been used and have been reclaimed by the rough..

Don't get me stated;)

No qualifiers at our place through the winter. We'll have the unofficial winter series of competitons though, so something to keep the game going at least.

We'll soon be taking the medal tees off for the winter, and once they are gone we'll be playing from the yellows until probably December when we'll move onto winter teeing areas between Dec-Feb, then back onto yellows and have the whites back on from mid/late March.

We do get quite wet in the winter though, so probably very much about protecting the tee areas. Winter greens have already been defined and holed, but we'll only use them when frosty.

Not looking forward to playing off mats though, might look into a winter membership at one of the links courses.

No qualifiers where I have joined either, but not surprising being an inland course in Scotland.

I do think some clubs are missing a trick though, October over recent years has been an excellent month in terms of weather and no reason why the course shouldn't be able to cope with more competitions.

Completely understandable though if clubs plan on doing some course maintenance, new drainage, tees or alterations to bunkers, where they are likely to need to get heavy machinery on the course. Better to do that while the ground is still firmer and give the course as long as possible to recover before the next season starts in April.
