Qualifiers over the winter or Lack of.....

Our monthly medal, which is always the last weekend of the month, is a year round thing, and any postponents are always rescheduled.

Why not just notify the pro shop before hand that you intend on putting in a supplementary?
Isn't that where supplementary scores come in?http://www.englandgolf.org/page.aspx?sitesectionid=340Actually, as no CSS is used, it could be easier to lower your handicap using this approach?
Because he is Cat 1 and not able to put in supplementary cards
He is cat 1 - unable to put in supplementary cardsSam there are a number of winter series opens that are qualifiers around the country?
I'm off 4, so no can do i'm afraid
The CONGU manual on the England Golf website states that Supplementaries are available to all handicap categories.

There is, however a restriction on Cat 1s in that they can only submit 3 in the 6 months from September to ensure maintaining a competition handicap.

see Note 2

Cat 1 with non competitive HC may insert up to three supplementary scores to gain a Competitve HC

Cat 1 May use 3 cards to keep a competitive HC ( if there isn't enough qualifiers to keep your HC active )

And they are - but there are restrictions applicable to cat 1 that basically restrict them to submissions from Sept in the year and limited to those necessary to retain a (c) status (last time I looked).

The logic is simple - at Cat 1 you are expected to earn any reductions within controlled Q environments!

Edit - as you now reference and Phil has posted in detail...

The likelihood is that clubs who don't continue qualifiers all year round may well have reduced course length more than that permitted. Supplementaries rely on a measured course which has not been shortened beyond that permitted reduction.

I think courses that stay on a full measured course all year round are very lucky. Our place will go to the "winter course" (mats mostly well in front of the proper tees with no measured SSS) from probably early Nov to early April. As the conditions will mostly require lift clean and place/drop through the green it's really of no consequence. Nobody really bothers or objects.....it's just "winter golf", a fun game loosely based on real golf where we play things like team games, 5 club challenges etc. Quite enjoy it when I do get out tbh.

I left a previous club as they automatically shortened the course come October and thus I had no qualifiers for at least 5 months, and that club was pretty shy on them anyway during the summer.

My new club will only not have any qualifiers if the course is too short due to work being carried out on our greens, not just because its a calendar date.

I play in winter series comps as qualifiers locally but wouldn't consider Foa as its far from a winter course, I select mainly heathland courses which can cope much better Brampton Heath being a decent one.

Unless we have a deluge of rain we are open on full tees and greens thru winter. We also have a winter series of medals we can play in from November to April. If we are closed thru winter then every course local will be too, but there are times ours is open when the rest are closed.

Seems very strange. We have qualifiers all year barring temporary greens. I don't see why a club wouldn't want to run them

Bless your eternal optimism, Homer. It's not a matter of want, it's a matter of can't. The weather's a bit different 500 miles north you know. :)

This weekend will be my clubs last qualifier until April next year. I cant knock the club during the summer as we have close to 100 Qs that are playable.

But when it comes to golf in the winter, its hard work knowing you could play the round of your life and not have anything to show for it (in handicap terms).

anyone else share my frustration at their club?
If you lived in a sensible part of the country (i.e. Southern England), you could have qualifiers all year!

Given that a live further south than your profile suggests, and I grew up in Portsmouth (where my course also didn't have Qualifiers). That point is fairly redundant ;-)

My club in Hertfordshire has qualifiers all year round, although we may lose one or two due to weather conditions. Ditto my previous club in Buckinghamshire. :)

Has nothing to do with location as I stated in my previous post, a previous club I was at religiously brought out the mats to tee off on all Par 3's and some other par 4's from October even though the weather was great, this made the course too short even when on the original greens!

I just couldn't justify over £1k for only 7 months of competitive golf when I was wanting to concentrate on reducing my handicap.

I always have a habit of reaching or getting into a bit of form towards the end of a season, so there's nothing worse than to having to wait 5 months or more for the first qualifier the next year.

I was so lucky down in Hampshire, on the south coast.

Dry course due to its location and drainage so had 3 qualifiers a week for most of the year!

Location is everything unless the course needs special protection I guess.

This is the key, some clubs just do things because they always have and work to a calendar date even though the weather is still magnificent, really gets my goat

I've just received our monthly Greenkeeper email update which informs us of work and changes over the coming weeks, were going to have some temp greens soon but that's just because of drainage work being carried out then they'll be returned to us, the only change he has asked of us is, would we all mind playing off the yellows over the winter so they can really concentrate this year on our medal tees, the relationship and more so the communication between our head greenkeeper and members is excellent compared to what I have seen elsewhere
