Money List Winner
I see Blatter is playing the race card now in respect to the Qatar bid. The guy is pure class!
There are far too many people with fingers in pies in FIFA with Blatter being the worst
Always amusing when they hold their own "investigation"
Things won't change because lots of money changes hands and anyone who does stand up to Blatter just gets thrown out
You bring up a four year old thread because of a visitor not paying attention to common sense advice clearly laid out by the FCO. I can't see any relation at this stage to what may go on in the world cup, especially as the match was in the UAE and not Qatar. Seems a bit of a non-story to mehttps://amp.theguardian.com/world/2...ch?CMP=share_btn_tw&__twitter_impression=true
A man arrested for wearing a Qatar shirt to a Qatar match held in UAE
The World Cup is going to be so much fun
Wonder if we should do a sweepstake on the amount of arrests
Got to admit I've with Homer on this seems a relative non story and has no bearing on the Qatar World Cup. He was wearing a Qatar shirt in the UAE where its banned, not in Qatar as you stated and he probably had no idea he was doing wrong as he isn't native to the country.
Absolutely no bearing on the World Cup or reasons for potential arrests. Bigger fact in policing when it comes round is if people go there and act like typical brits abroad and don't follow the rules and culture then yes there will be arrests and everyone will be up in arms about it even though by simply following the countries rules and culture will prevent 95% of any potential arrests. But that's not relevant to the Guardian article and something to address as and when not to pre empt or start saying how it will be because people don't want it to be there. Its a world cup Qatar is just as entitled to host it as anyone..
Totally agree except the last bit!Got to admit I've with Homer on this seems a relative non story and has no bearing on the Qatar World Cup. Agreed very hot for football but there's still the debate it may move its point in the calendar or there could yet be plans we don't yet know to reduce risksTotally agree except the last bit!
It has to be safe for the players and imo 40*+ heat isn’t.
First of all I didn’t state he was in Qatar
Secondly - the cultures are pretty much similar and you get the same issues you see in UAE and Qatar , maybe you haven’t witnessed it or understand it but there isn’t a massive difference between the two countries
As for your last line - complete nonsense , it was bought with bribes and it’s completely screwing up the worlds football calendar - it has the potential to be a horror show in lots of ways
Yes I have been to both - worked in both , same with Saudi , Bahrain , Kuwait , Iraq etc etc1. Fair enough..
2. I know the difference I've been there to both UAE and Qatar and many other countries in that part of the world so have witnesed it and understand it. Have you been there before you throw a statement at me like that..
3. Are you naive enough to think that all sporting events aren't bought, hence the tender process they go through for infrastructure, and imo doesn't matter how they got it, it's the world Cup so its going somewhere in the world it hasn't been and that's good for cultures to experience different things. Football and the world Cup isn't the sole possession of the western world.
It's posts like this Phil that don't help.Yes I have been to both - worked in both , same with Saudi , Bahrain , Kuwait , Iraq etc etc
The issues faced by people from the West are the same hence why i posted the article about someone being arrested just for wearing a shirt of an opponent - it’s not going to be much different in Qatar.
The World Cup and indeed many other major sporting occasions are normally a celebration- people party , they meet members of the opposite sex , the drink - have a good time - imagine that in Qatar where it’s not hidden in the hotels, their culture doesn’t want to experience that side of western culture and people are going to get caught out.
And that’s even before talking about the weather or the human rights etc
Countries bid for sporting events - FIFA took it to another level in regards the level of bribery going on hence why people are now in jail for it .
It's posts like this Phil that don't help.
I've been to all those countries you mentioned some for work in the forces some for work in civilian world and seen both sides of their societies good and bad as a result.
Yet its the middle part about not wanting to experience that side of Western culture and people getting caught out that bugs me because I refer to my original post on this thread, people act like typical brits abroad they'll get punished. That is the issue not the people of Qatar or any part of that area not wanting it, it's their country their regime and their rules that work for them as a result anyone visiting their should and must accept the culture and behave appropriately. Its their country and westerners don't have a divine right to act as they do at home, they do however need to respect they will have to act in a matter befitting on the environment they're in. We expect people to abide by our laws and rules when they come here, its no different if we go there.
If people get caught out because they can't respect the environment in which they're in that's not the fault of anyone in Qatar but the fault of the moron that misbehaves and thinks people should let brits be brits and do what they want.
Agreed Fifa took it to another lever but that's now past we have to deal with the hand we're dealt and move on.
Without wishing to seem I'm taking issue directly, the article itself was very explicit and said he was in UAE in a Qatar shirt but it also goes on to clearly state there was clear FCO advice in place and he didn't follow it. From that perspective, it's a non-story about a man who was foolish in a foreign land and it just happened to be at a football game. He isn't the first and won't be the lastFirst of all I didn’t state he was in Qatar

Haven't missed it at all but that is often a stock response you give when you don't agree with what someone replies to you or happens to disagree with you so not much point continuing the discussion if you're not willing to listen to the otherside. You have missed the point by a long way
And not sure why you are going on about just Brits - the World Cup is a big Party for lots of nations - lots and they are like to have fun - you only need to look at the pictures of the last World Cup - people enjoying themselves - ladies showing skin , guys and girls having drinks and having games of football in fan parks , people hooking - why are you automatically assuming I’m on about Brit laddish behaviour ?
The fan parks are massive in the World Cup - and it’s not just Brit lads behaviour
The best thing is for fans to boycott it .
Show fifa what fans think.
But can’t see that many going there anyway.
Not just us everyone.I would imagine that the orgonisors would be delighted at an England fans boycott.
Probably half their security budget.![]()
Moving the date is not very practical with most leagues.Agreed very hot for football but there's still the debate it may move its point in the calendar or there could yet be plans we don't yet know to reduce risks
