Bearing in mind that several high profile pros, such as Adam Scott, Ernie Els and Webb Simpson, have successfully reverted to short putters after apparently being forced to use long putters to overcome the putting yips, would it be possible to find out how they overcame this debilitating (for golfing success) condition? A basis for a possible article Mr Harris? :mmm:

Did they have the yips or did they just putt better using the long putter?

Adam Scott never had the yips.

Ernie Els and Adam Scott definitely had the putting yips. David Feherty once introduced Ernie as "putting with a live snake", which accurately described what his putting looked like at the time, and how the yips feel if you have them! :(

Adam Scott never had the yips, see the link above.

Poor putting stats from 10 feet in sounds exactly like the yips to me!

Sounds more like poor technique or green reading to me.

Maybe they could make the holes bigger??

Great idea! I'm sure that making the hole larger would reduce the incidence of the yips in older and more experienced golfers.

P.S. So how come Adam Scott's green reading improved so much after he adopted the long putter, which is independent of putting method?

Was putting easier with the old small ball ? I certainly putted better as a kid, before the old shakes set in. Mind you all the greens were flat in those days, the sun always shone, I never hit a bad shot.

So that's putting yips brought up for the tenth time to join strong lofts , just long rough and bigger holes to go to have the full Delc set

Swings and roundabouts really. The small ball probably was more likely to fall into the hole with a reasonably accurate putt, but was also more affected by irregularities in the green's surface as it rolled towards it.

I said POOR TECHNIQUE or GREEN READING.

Maybe it was his technique that improved with the long putter. Improved technique with a long putter DOES NOT mean he had the yips with a short one before you go putting words into my mouth.

According to the man himself...

" I could feel that my rhythm immediately improved, and I was putting a great roll on the ball. I was interested but wanted to keep it quiet, so Brad bought one for me at a local golf shop. I practiced only in my back yard. (Scotty Cameron built me the one I'm using now. It's 49 inches.) I knew it worked, but putting well at the Masters was huge."

Nothing to do with the yips...

When I developed the yips, it was mainly the putts of a length that I should hole that were the problem. Also very long putts when I was trying to leave the ball close enough to hole the next one. Medium length putts were never a problem. I cured my problems by changing to the claw grip, which felt like the difference between night and day to me. I could suddenly make a smooth and controlled putting stroke again, instead of a jerky stab at the ball! It is believed that using a long putter for a while might help to get some rhythm back into your putting stroke, which is what may have happened with Adam. :)

Aye, you've mentioned what happened to you before....

That's not what happened to Adam - read the article with quotes from the man himself.

I did, and it still sounded like the yips to me!

To be fair, everything sounds like the yips to you, but he still didn't have them.

So just to summarise, when you said earlier that Adam Scott definitely had the yips you were wrong.

You're welcome.
