Hi all

Any ideas.....I seem to putt well in practice with line and length but do not seem to transfer that to the course.

Average 32 putts but missing just by a little on 6-8 fts ..perhaps reading to much break.

Any suggestions please.

Many thanks

maybe you are trying to account too much or too little for the different putting conditions on the course compared to your practise area (which you prob know inside out)

It will average out in time. Sometimes the practice green is a little faster/slower than the greens on the course.

Wow my dopplegangler(sp)

Could be one of many many things my friend.

Could you get some one to take a video or at least a picture of you face on and down the line. I am sure Bob and the other experts could help.

Not claiming to know anything here but just sharing my experiences of late.

I went for a lesson (you should too) and the pro immediatly moved my ball position, it was too far away from my body, so the plumb line (eye to ball) was out, and so it was causing alignment problems

Check this pic out

If you put a straight edge through my eyes down to the floor, you will notice the ball is outside by a good ball width. My eyes are inline with the hole but the ball isn't.

I dont have another picture of how I putt now to compare too but I now have my hands closer to my waist and I stand a little more up right.

I was also leaving the face open through impact about 1/5 putts that would miss right.

Dont forget, if the greens your playing aint true, it is a lottery anyway. I thought I was a bad putter till I played Hoylake, I was pretty good really!

also remember until we're playing on decent summer greens it's not so much putting as hitting at the mo. Nobody putts decent on these greens. Just concentrate on putting the best stroke you can on the ball and leave the rest to the golfing gods!

Um Guys.....

32 putts is much less than 2 putts per green.
What's the issue here?

Unless you're off single figures I reckon 32 putts isnot a bad days work - don't forget regulation is 36!!!

All very well Imurg but if he is hitting mighty close to the flag and bagging a good %age of GIR's he may be able to chop that 32 down to 30 by fixing his fault.

I understand it could be a million different things and that is why I aint offered any advice. But it could also be something as simple as alignment if he is constantly missing by a little bit on the 6-8footers.

No matter how good we are, we always want to improve.

Exactly. I had 32 putts the other day, but still didn't hole anything over 7 foot, and missed more than a few 4 footers.

Hi Imurg

10.5 handicap at the moment and need all the putts I can get.

I have noticed in the past that when ever I put in a really good round the putts are 28 or below but not doing that at the moment....Thanks for your input and the others I shall book a lesson with my pro.

Do you feel mentally and physically the same on the greens as you do on practice green when putting?

If not, that in itself is enough to account for minor errors and from what you say, your errors are just that.

Maybe go for a putting lesson and C/F?

I daren't tell you some of my recent putting stats, all helped by an improved short game of course.

Last 9 I played, I was better from off the green than the green, chipped to between 2-8 foot and never missed....

Even if it doesn't last, I'm enjoying it!!

PS...32 is very good, unless you are off a very low h'cap.

I had a putting lesson last weekend. My coach changed the grip of my left hand significantly so it was more down the side of the club (stops the wrist breaking down so much) and got me to stand much taller but with my eyes still over the ball. This gave me more room to rock my shoulders back and through the line. He also pointed out my shoulders were very closed and got me to square them. It feels like my left shoulder is pointing way left of target but when he put a club across them its perfectly square now.

I had 34 putts yesterday and was putting very well. One 3 putt caused by not taking enough time (blase) and another by a poor read on a long putt giving myself to much to do

You will have th epleasure of knowing it will happen again though ;)

I wish I knew, My putting which used to be pretty good has taken leave. I hope it comes back soon. I'm blaming the greens at the mo, but surley the greens are no excuse for missing 1 footer's. Please come back soon putting, we all miss you.

As I said in my first post, I thought I was having a torrid time putting this year. I know our greens aint up to scratch yet because they have jusy been top dressed etc and they are very untrue. I have worked hard on my putting last month or so and am convinced I aint doing much wrong, confirmed by pro. Out on the course I thought it was just me not taking it out there with me.

When I played Hoylake on Wed with Mike and Dave, the greens where very good and played pretty true, I putted really quite well, leaving some great ones on the edge.

I am now convinced its not me and will stick to what I am doing and hope the greens get better quickly.

How fast are the greens that you normally play on?
I think the pace is as much a factor as the quality of the surface.

I tend to putt better on quicker greens. Yes, if they bobble a lot, you are going to miss more, but if you control the distance, unless it is a total mis-read, you are going to be pretty close to the hole.

Yes, and faster greens means smaller stroke. Smaller stroke means better putting (i.m.o.)

We often had lightening fast greens for the yearly "big'uns". I never felt pressured, as you say, as long as you don't go mad a belt the longer ones, it's much easier.

All in the mind of course.... :)
