my daughter has asked what I want for xmas - i thought of a putting mat - seen them advertised by direct Golf..anyone used one/got one? are they any good? do you get a true roll? do they help your stroke or are they just a gimmick?

I use one during the winter. If you can bang in a succession of 4 to 5 footers, then when faced with this distance for real next spring, you have a good memory of success. Not for every one, but I like it.

It will only roll true if your floor is flat though.

From my perspective, seeing as I do sell them!

It really depends on what facilities you already have at home. Are you on wood or carpeted floors for example. If you're on wooden floors then a putting mat is going to be of some use.

However if you have usable carpeted floors then perhaps something to help your putting set-up, stroke, alignment, or aim may be a better use of finances, and for your game.

I'm hoping santa will bring mw one as i have been good all year honest

I have wood all through the house so a matt will help me practise at home on those cold winter nights.

I have a putting mat and use it quite often. 20,30,40? short ones instead of watching telly for 20 minutes.
Can't hurt can it.....

Dont you have a putting green at the club you can use often and then pick up a decent training aid to use, or is it because you cant get to the green as often as you want?

I have a cheap one from argos, 6ft maybe? not bad for about a 10er.

If you are going to get one get a good one. The cheap ones do not give a true roll and are a bit of a waste of time IMHO.

We have a 9'Huxley mat at home and it is really good. You do however need a good bit of room and they are not cheap.
