Watching the Fedex last night I was paying particular notice of the back swing of not only Tigers but the others length of their back swing when putting it seems they take much less back swing than me even on longer puts,I know it all depends on the length of the putt but I was comparing my back swing on the lengths of putts they where making and Tiger ,on a certain putt, was keeping his putter head inside his feet where i would be taking twice as long backwards than he would, what am I doing wrong?help please...

I've always been told: go twice as long with your 'follow through' swing as you did on your backswing. Remember they are putting on marble like greens, speeds which average Joe's like us are unlikely to play on all too often!

Do you come up short a lot?

Lengthy backswings sometimes mean deceleration, a shorter backswing helps to ensure acceleration so essential to good putting.

Remember though that the pro's are on very fast greens.

Try putting something at your back foot to block you taking it further back and see how much better you strike the putts (practice green only obviously).

I have recently curtailed my back swing on putts, particularly short to medium putts with good results. Three putts are niticeably fewer and further between, and usually only when the first putt is very long, and the rate of one putts is much better.

I think it is simply that with the shorter back swing there is agreater chance of keeping your line. Just make sure you also have a full follow through and adjust the weight of strike to the distance required.

Wouldn't it be better if you vary the length of backswing for the distance required rather than the weight of strike?

Does anyone else never really think about backswing length? I don't. I pick a line, I then take three practice strokes while looking at the hole to judge the pace, take my address, one look at the target and go.

Yeah I was always told the speed/weight of the strike should be as consistent as possible and the length of the back swing determines the distance roll.... struggle both ways to be honest!

I think Dr Bob posted some video clips recently about the length of swings (or am I mistaken). For me I tend to be focussed on the line and trust my stroke so don't consciously think about it during the round
