Putting...gauging distance ?

Why?

Distance control with any club is important, and a lot of good golfers strive to achieve it, the putter should be no different.

Because it's far too mechanical for me and I'm more of the opinion that putting is more feel. If it works Jacko that's fine, but it's too much thinking for me.

Thats the crux of the matter.
Some like to play golf by feel, others want to know all the numbers.
Both are right

I'm a big advocate of taking a couple of practice swings while looking at the hole. Someone told me once it helps you subconsciously work out how hard you need to hit it... Whether there's scientific fact in there, I dont know (and dont care) as it seems to work for me.

think of it this way, if you had to throw the ball underhand at the hole would you look at the ball or the hole while making the action? ;)

For long putts (well all but the short or straight ones where the point is the hole) I pick where the break is and putt to then let gravity get the ball to the hole.

For uphill putts this point can be behind the hole!

I then practice to putt to this point and then just let my mind do the work to get the weight right. Practice and good technique are the only ways of getting long putts close as you need to get the power out the shot that your brain expects!

Try varying your practice swings - a couple that would definitely send the ball too far, a couple that would definitely leave it short, then a couple that should send the right distance. You'll develop feel quite quickly.

Completely off topic, but this is also a good way to guess the time if you need to.

It's definitely not as late as...
It's definitely later than....

Then narrow it down gradually from either side.

Sorry, carry on. :o

It is just hand to eye coordination. Try rolling the ball with your hand a few times to holes that are the other side of the putting green. Then try to replicate that feeling/tempo with a putter to the same hole position.

Used this little trick today and i have to say my lag putting was very, very good.

Sunk a cheeky little 30 footer to save par on our 8th and missed a terry wogan esque 60 plus footer for an eagle, by the proverbial dogs whisker.

All my putts from distance were really good and i was there or there abouts more often and not.

However.

I did mange to 4 putt once and had a couple of 3 putts. Mind you they were all from inside of 10 feet :o

I did look like i was playing imaginary crown green bowls mind you..haha

Had a 90 mins on the putting today.
They were very wet and slow, got a feel for some 10ft then just picked shots at random distances between 15 & 80 ft !

Tried quite a few with my eyes closed and surprised how well they went, very few were short ? even holed a couple at 60 feet :D

It may be the extra weight i've added , but fingers crossed i can keep it up.

Mucho grassyass for the tips

I try and pick a point (distance wise) of how hard to hit it, and imagine it rolling out and slowing down from there.

Shorter putts, just bang it in.
