Since my return to golf late last year my short game has deserted me, especially the putting,
changed putters to something heavier to try and help me get to the hole ,
It worked for a short while but now i seem to struggle to lag putt,
it's usually left short on 15+ ft even though i try and hit it past :(

Pearls of wisdom much appreciated

Hit it harder! All joking aside I am interested in this thread as I too am terrible from distance, difference is I can leave it short or bomb right by, at least you are consistently short:lol: if it wasn't for my putting I would be on tour. . . .

This is going to sound like new age mumbo jumbo, but just look at the distance - from the side if possible - and let your brain figure out how hard to hit it.

Once you trust it it works way better than thinking about it while you make the stroke.

It is just hand to eye coordination. Try rolling the ball with your hand a few times to holes that are the other side of the putting green. Then try to replicate that feeling/tempo with a putter to the same hole position.

It is still winter time. don't freak out about putting till half way through summer. if you still can't get the speed then its time to worry about it.

Make your backswing longer.
Anyone who has to 'hit' their putts has either a backswing that is too short, slow greens or big greens.

If you watch the video below, you will see three putts go different distances by keeping the same tempo but varying the length of swing

Grip the putter lightly, it's amazing what a difference that makes. Take a couple of practice swings while looking at the hole, then put the same swing on the ball. Improved my lag putting no end. "The Art of Putting" by Stan Utley is an excellent book.

The more you think about it, the worse you will be

I just look at the putt from at least two angles, and then just let my brain take over. Over thinking putts or worrying too much about technique usually makes my putting worse!

so no aimpoint then?

@OP- just get out and practice. I'll wager you have half a dozen practice putts before a round only?

Why, oh why did I open my mouth? Just put one a putting display so bad that my opponents were laughing at me.

Try varying your practice swings - a couple that would definitely send the ball too far, a couple that would definitely leave it short, then a couple that should send the right distance. You'll develop feel quite quickly.

For distance, I walk from the ball to the flag... each step roughly 2 and a half feet... to get a distance. Get a line, ball towards the front foot, line up & one inch of swing to the foot (allow a bit for uphill or less for down). Equal length backswing & follow through with my eye over the ball. Usually very good for length but still miss a few...

That's way too much thinking for my liking
