Hi all,

I'm looking to upgrade my cheapo putter that has served me well for a while now. I'm a big fan of traditional blades so will most likely stick to them but I've often wondered the difference between inert and milled faces. Are inserts interchangeable? My gripe with my current putter is that the face has worn slightly and I feel it affects putting. If an insert is changeable, could I simply pop in another insert if one becomes damaged?

Dont think you can replace the inserts

i have had both and now use the Odyssey white hot XG insert and it takes time to get used to the feel for pace

Also depends on the ball you use i.e soft or hard distance ball

On the new odyssey flip face putters you can (obviously) flip the face, changing between an insert, and a metal face, which seems like quite an intruiging idea, and could be handy for you if you can't your mind up between the two

I'm bound to be corrected but I don't know any putters that have interchangeable inserts. I have an old Ping Anser 2 with a solid metal face and I'm looking to upgrade and would prefer to keep a solid face and so looking at milled. The price is off putting on a lot but the latest Ping Anser incarnation and in particular the Anser 2 is looking the likely choice so far.

I'm tempted to go to a local range that Hawekeye went to for a test. It wasn't a C/F as such but the pro checked the stroke and the basics (alignment etc - so a kind of mini putting lesson) and then worked with him to see what suited best. If they have the Ping's and the Odyseey Protype in stock then it might be a goer

Quite surprisingly, with the amount of time I've spent in golf shops since getting back into golf last year, I haven't bothered testing any putters. I had an old second hand wilson putter from the age of about 6 until last year when I came to look for my old clubs but couldn't find it anywhere and I just bought a crappy £12 putter from the pro shop.

I guess I'm going to have to get myself down to the newly discovered local AG and try some out.

And who is JohnO by the way?

I'd be surprised if the wear is affecting anything other than the aesthetic look of the club. I mean, how badly worn can it be??

It's a completely smooth metal face and has a large scratch/chip in the centre. It probably doesn't affect it massively but it certainly affects my confidence with it.
