Putt from the fringe?

I opted for chipping (well, bump and run) but it does depend on how much ground there is clear before the ball should be rolling. Anything under 15ft and it's a put if the apron/fringe is short enough.

I was testing the 7-iron pitch/putt this evening, hit the stick three times from distances between 10 and 35 ft. (fortunately in some cases as otherwise the ball was a goner).
I also tried using the 4-hybrid chip/punch from as far out as 125 yds from under trees - got the line right but overran by 15 yds!

Anyone remember the "bladed SW" technique that was all the rage in the last millennium.....never got that at all?!?!
