Morning AllMy first post in the forum so not really sure how this works.Over the course of last week I must have pulled a muscle in my right side, it has got gradually worse over the weekend culminating in me hardly being able to hit a shot in the AM/AM tournament I was playing in yesterday.I played quite a bit last week and think I have just over done it. Don't you love it, not had an injury all winter then first proper comp of the season arrives and have a niggling injuryAny tips and thoughts for me to assist it as I have the first qualifying medal on Saturday and would really like to play in it as it is a qualifier for a decent club competition.Thinking of taking relaxing baths and not hitting a ball till Friday and see what happens. Will ice help and some heat patches?.

Hi and welcome along,

Sounds pretty nasty that, I think most folk would say rest up and either A. seek medical advice and/or B. don’t push it cos you'll only end up doing yourself a mischief that might see you out of a larger part of the season.

It might not be what you want to hear, but there rae plenty on here who can attest to pushing themselves and being out of action for serious lay offs as a result.

Tore muscles in my chest and right arm wrestling with the bairn over Xmas - I've managed 23 holes since December its still painful. First comp is a week on Saturday so I'm dosing myself with painkillers til then so I can make the 18

Yeah I have taken ibuprofen to be able to play yesterday but played awful as I wasn't confident in hitting the ball and couldn't hit an iron because of this and ended up shanking every iron I hit.

welcome to the injured golfers club;)

got an injury to my right hand at the moment, suspected tendon damage just awaiting an Xray/Scan.

managed to play a couple of times over the weekend, but not great if I'm honest.

I'm afraid but "don't play" isn't just the best but actually the only advice I can give you.

I pulled some muscles on my right side (rib cage just below my chest) last year. It had to pause for full 7 weeks (from beginning of august till mid September...) until I could play again, partly because I tried starting to play again too soon (after about 3.5 weeks). Went to see a doctor after that attempt and he told me to wait until I was completely pain free again and take ibuprofen until then, since it's anti-inflammatory and helps with the actual healing, not just the pain.

The problem is, when you keep stressing a pulled muscle this can lead to further, even permanent tissue damage.

I know how hard it is to skip on tournaments, I even missed our club championships because of the injury, but you could end up missing out on much more tournaments or golf in general if you don't stress you body too much now.

Personally taking pain relief to play is a really bad decision. Pain is there for a reason - to tell you something is wrong so stop what you're doing. Taking pain relief stops that signal and you risk making it worse - potentially a lot worse.
Take pain relief so you can sleep at night, shave, wipe your rear end, whatever, but don't take it so you can hurt yourself more.

take professional advice and then do as you're told! I've tried the alternative and just ended up extending the recovery time!!!

I agree with this.

years ago I had a pulled neck injury. I played in a society and had committed to society team matches and a knockout comp that for the first time I had reached the Quarters. Played through all these dosed to the eyeballs with ibuprofen and topping up through the rounds. Worst decision ever! I was out of playing golf for months afterwards and life in general was so painful.
Even now 20 years later I am prone to neck injuries.
a few weeks voluntary rest will save months of enforced rest.

Had a long soak in a bath and it has really helped it. I have also bought some heat patches that were recommended to me and they seem to be easing it a lot.

I will leave it till Friday and pop up to the practice ground and hit a few pitches and see how it feels then see how I am on Saturday morning as not teeing off till 11:54 so will see how I get on. Maybe a nice long soak in the bath on Saturday morning might help a bit aswell.
