Watching Telly last night and daughter was on the Ross Kemp show for the last 10 minutes. She is an armed copper. One of two females in the south Yorks police. They followed her and others on her first call out. In essence the show was on about the police officers thoughts on more armed police on the streets. But it never asked what were the publics thoughts. I am proud as punch at what she does but I would be a liar if I said I did not have worries, especially when she talks about some aspects of her job.

So what is the publics/ your thoughts on more armed police. Cheers me dears
 
Had recorded the programme so will keep a look out for your daughter. Personally I'm happy enough with the current status quo and wouldn't want to go down the road of continental and US coppers have have most of them armed. I would like to see more trained firearms officers available especially in major cities though. What are your daughters thoughts from the inside
 
First of all, well done to your daughter.

I don't want every police officer to be armed. You can give them tasers but not guns. Specialist teams, yes, every officer no.
 
For the foreseeable future I would arm the lot of them, too many have been killed on duty with insufficient protection, they are on the front line and run towards danger, why turn up at a gunfight with a stick?

To be honest Homer. Some of the jobs she has been to scare the bejesus out of you as a dad. But it is what it is. A couple of the coppers Mr Kemp speaks to shows you the footage of jobs they have been to. Stopping someone with a stick when they have a samurai sword. Hmmm. Daughter reckons the ahiw dont show the aide where a lot of the armed police are there for terrorist prevention. Going to cover pop shows, covering meadowhall etc etc. Soft terrorist targets. She loves it. But its not every coppers cuppa tea. To keep costs down they wanted traffic coppers training up as armed bobbies. They said no chance they want to drive cars, not shoot people. When she was being filmed. She told him she had a crush on him When he was in Eastenders. Had his posters on the wall. She said she was six yr old at the time. She said the room
Was full of bobbies and they were wetting there pants laughing.

Whilst i'd like to see more armed police, arming all of them mybe a step too far as there's a rife mis-use of power and cover ups across all forces up and down the country, i wouldnt like the "wrong copper" to be armed.

i accept its a minority aswell.

During the miners strike. The Met police were grade one tossers. Again not all but enough to leave a long lasting bad impression. At Wembley last weekend. I saw nothing to help change my mind.
However if there are any golfers on here who are bobbies from Somerset. You are having a big Tashyboy cuddle when Tash sees you coz they were salt of the earth.

That's Dorset NOT Somerset.

Arm them. We tend to overthink this, if you take most countries in Europe the Police carry sidearms and don't appear to be gungho. Some of our Police and public would not have lost their lives in terrorist attacks had the Police been armed.

We start carrying semi-automatics, they buy automatics. We start wearing Kevlar...they buy armor-piercing rounds.

The knife issue in the uk is bad enough we don’t need to encourage escalation to guns

Some of the guys I play golf with came over from Cumbria in 1985 approx. They stated that the Met guys were really awful winding up the miners, talking about how much money in overtime the cops were on. Whilst Scargill was not my favourite what the bobbies did was way out of order.

3 O TT. This hits the nail firmly on the head. They were goin down Notts waving £10ers and 20s in miners faces just looking for trouble. Mostly single lads. The guys from Somerset we married. Missed there wives and kids and could relate to the crap we were going through. One of the Somerset coppers we called him Worzel. He was a real character. Loved him to bits. One day he was moved from his regular post as he was fraternising or getting to close to the enemy. He used to share his buttys with us. Now as then there arw some bad apples. But think overly there are plenty of good coppers out there.

In the mean time we let Coppers hunt for gun toting criminals on the run carrying a baton and wearing a stab vest!
Should we really be basing the safety of our streets on a Batman movie!

So we arm every copper? Like the quote says the criminals just respond with automatic weapons..

We don’t have a massive gun issue in the uk. We have some gun related deaths but if we escalate the situation those deaths will treble

This is something I have thought long and hard about, do I think being armed would of made a difference to the 2 you mentioned, yes I do . However other people would post/put up links to other incidents where people have been shot holding a chair leg or other items.

Me personally, I would not want to be armed, there are also officers I don't trust with a stapler never mind a gun. However that doesn't make my view right. If it was made compulsory to carry a firearm then yes I would , however if given the choice at the moment my answer would be no.
 
One thing i forgot to mention re what daughter said was the amount of cases they respond to where mental issues are a factor. You just dont know what your/ a copper is going to.

Nope, that’s is the worry, but no proof, statistics show the guns are already in the hands of the criminals, do all the Countries who have armed police have that issue?

It’s not something that could hapoen over night, it would take years, you need to train them, some Coppers currently serving have no wish to be armed and they should be respected and allowed to finish their careers unarmed, as new Coppers are taken on, arm them, eventually all will be armed.

I believe we are living in a dream world if we think we’ll never have a fully armed Police Force.
