My daughter was voted for junior Lord Mayor of Liverpool today. It’s an initiative run by the council with schools across the city.

She wrote her own speech and was voted for by her peers.

I’m so proud of her.

She will attend events with the mayor for 1 month.

Reviving an old thread..

Nipper tried out at Surrey County U10 Cricket Assessement a few weeks ago. He is a cricket nut and an all rounder. Small for his age. Anyways during Easter he did his U9 trials but did not make it. So he made his mind that he wanted to and worked on his skills.

The club worked with him and he now plays U11. Another club has asked him if he wants to join them and another county coach also mentioned that they would like him to try out with them if Surrey does not work out.

Like every other kid he is keen to hit the ball as far as possible. When one of the coaches mentioned that they like to see defensive shots, he spent a few weeks learning forward and backward defensive shots.

So we went off to County assessment. He batted all right, did not lose his wicket and played some of the bad balls well. Bowling was good and took a couple of wickets. He has a decent pace and is able for move the ball off the deck both ways.

Very excitedly got the assessment results and unfortunately he did not make it!! None of the coaches understand how he slipped thru the net and all of them say Surrey is a bit of a lottery as it has a massive talent pool.

Anyways very proud of kiddo that he put his heart into something he loved. Almost everyday did some drills, learnt new skills and adapted his game. Disappointed about the result, but all part of learning process. You can only try and work hard.

With that sort of attitude I am sure it will come.
When he gets his chance all the work he’s done will pay off.
To many give up at the first disappointing result.
He sounds like he’s made of sterner stuff.
Hope he does well in future.

Good luck with him, keep encouraging!

His current goal is to be a Test player, so hopefully it will work for him

I don’t know, he is still U9, and kids go thru massive changes as they develop. Let’s see how this ‘failure’ changes his view of cricket esp since footy kicks off soon

DMed you.

Was at a kids party today, my son who's 2.5 noticed a young lad standing in the corner and not joining in the games with the others. He walked over to him, took him by the hand and asked him if he'd like to play. Absolutely made my day.

Awesome.. funny how kids have less inhibitions when they are younger

Great post and hope he gets picked up if he continues to progress. I wouldn't worry about Surrey as they are very callous about picking youngsters up and then letting them go very quickly. We had a quick bowler in the school team when I was about 11 and he went to all the Surrey training, played a few matches and his dad even took him for private coaching but Surrey said they weren't interested by the time he got to 13. He gave up pretty quickly and when we were talking over a few beers and reminiscing he said it was a real downer and he felt Surrey had been playing him and his dad all the way along the process and wished that had he not been good enough they were honest upfront

There is a glut of talent in Surrey. Very big county + half of london lot come thru. I appreciate all the work the coaches do, pretty thankless and lots of agendas at play.

I am told this is not just a cricket issue, same in hockey. Had someone in the office who played with them as a kid/youngster, but he did not want to put his son into the system and chose a different county. Now the kid plays at a decent level and has played against Surrey with success.

Not quite certain what it is that you expect from the County youth system.

As the father of two sons who each went through the system at a first class county from the then youngest age group, U11's, to U17's after which they chose to focus on their education and Club cricket I can assure you that the Counties do not expect to produce first class cricketers from each year group.

Indeed it would be amazing if they did as there are only 17 first class counties and around 30 counties playing youth representative cricket. If each year a squad of around 15 graduates from each of those there will be 450 18/19 years old cricketers available to the 17 FC counties.

Not very many will come through based on those numbers.

However, if your lad is good enough, and it sounds as if he has a positive attitude, don't worry he will get picked up.

But the most important thing is for him to enjoy his cricket and not to feel under any pressure. And beware of over-coaching, natural ability can sometimes be overwhelmed by rigid adherence to conventional methods.
