Problem after lesson

Hi all,

I have been suffering from a pull/pull hook shot over the last couple of months, so I booked myself on for a lesson. I was told I was getting a bit flat and behind on the down swing so the pro put me in the right position with arms in front of my sternum and got me releasing the club more, perfect! I was hitting the ball on line and had got my distance back, this continued after the lesson with the rest of my balls and I went home happier than I had in a long time. I decided to go to the range again last night to try and cement the changes, low and behold every shot was a 90* right slice about 25 yards, this was my bad shot when I first started!! I tried getting into the same position that I was shown but nothing worked, this has happened before and I nearly gave up the game. Do you think I need to book another lesson or give myself more time to try and change it myself? I know changing your swing takes time and effort and you usually take a step back at first but this was embarrassing. In the end I gave the rest of my balls away as I felt I was doing more harm than good. Can anybody fill me with a bit of confidence and tell me you have been through the same thing and managed to conquer it.

Thanks

You said that during your lesson, the pro got you releasing the club better.
Were you doing that on the next night.
Sounds as if the clubface is wide open at impact.
How's your grip?

Hi Bob,

Yes I felt like I was releasing the club like before, but I can feel myself cutting across the ball. My grip is a strong grip (3 knuckles on left hand)

I had a lesson on Thursday and hit a few balls on Friday and Saturday with more success than not. Thought I'd go to the practice ground on Sunday before going to see my mum and get some on video. Total rubbish and I couldn't get any of the feeling or repeat the impact position. The contact was still pretty good but I was still hitting with my normal swing (and the inherent faults)rather than the newer one.

I do have an excuse in that my mind isn't totally focussed at the moment but I had hit it well in the confines of a bay at the range and had been cautiously optimistic. I'm going to hit a few tonight so hopefully I'll be better. Stick with the changes. It will get worse before it gets better but ultimately you know what your pro is doing will benefit your game

The trouble is when you slice, you try not to slice which makes you slice even more.
Place a ball about 2 feet in front of the ball you're going to hit on a straight line to your target and try and hit the first ball at the second ball.
That will help you with your swing path

I have found that it usually takes more than one lesson to get a swing change sorted. It's easy to under or over do what you've been told because it feels different to what your used to. A lot depends on how much you're changing. In my view it would be worth having a follow up lesson, maybe in a couple of weeks, to see if you have got the changes right. Sooner if you feel you have really "lost it". It took me a few lessons to get rid of my slice some years back and to get a good idea of what I should be doing.

All the best.

My advice would to have a couple more lessons with the pro, sometimes it takes more than one lesson to get things sorted. It appears that what he told you was correct and you hit it great in the lesson but afterwards you hit it poorly in comparison. It's difficult to correlate feel with what you are actually doing and you cannot see yourself hitting balls. Another couple lessons should get you sorted and allow you to hit the ball better when by yourself. Don't get disheartened, you'll get there.

I recently had a lesson building on lessons over the summer. Took me good two weeks of doing the drill to get it sorted but very very glad I stuck with it!

I somehow shot a 94 with three 8s on the card (taking on shots from the rough I should have pitched out) The rest of the holes were one under my handicap!

Went to the range tonight to finally work on the drills from last Thursday with a clear head. A few shanks creeping in but more to do with a balance issue and soon sorted. I can feel the hip turn out of the way more than the turn and slide I have but not sure I'm quite on top of it and compressing it as much as I should be. It is certainly less of a reverse C at impact but still room for improvement

Keep repeating the drill(s) the pro gave you. When you make a change it's generally one step forward and two steps back until it gels :)

Keep the faith!
