Pro tour money

Average caddies on tour are normally on a basic rate between 800 and 1000 a week plus the percentages mentioned earlier on. They normally pay all their own way flights/accom etc. Caddies normally stick together and are working hard to get as good a bag as possible. An average player normally needs £80 to £100k to cover a season on the European Tour.

Plenty of interesting stories and I got chance to hear many the week of the '06 Open at Hoylake as Billy Foster stayed at our house for the duration of the tournament whilst caddying for DC.

Am I right in thinking that the Caddies Association which is affiliated under the European Tour umbrella does a lot of work nowadays to get caddies discount and frequent flying deals to travel. I know they tend to share hotel costs etc and so they must make some form of living wage to do it and support families.

Typical caddy earnings are 10% for a win, 7% for top 10 and 5% otherwise. Some caddies at the top end are on a retainer or guaranteed minimum, and some can earn a bit extra with their own stuff on the side.

Top end caddies, e.g Billy Foster, Steve Williams, travel in comfort with their players, but many of them get lifts with other caddies from one Tour stop to the next and stay in dodgy hotels to conserve money.

Almost all those not on retainers are paid a set amount for the week even if the player doesn't make the cut.

Transporting players bags from one venue to the next used to be a 'perk' for some as well.

But a 'new' caddy will normally need to earn/have about £20k to survive for the first season.

And if they get a 'good' bag, their 'colleagues' will be out to steal it from them!

The Rat business really is like a sewer!
