Off to the Algarve in 5 weeks time in a group of 16 blokes so today I started to try to put together some golf.

Now I was over here at New Year and made a few enquiries at some Central/Western courses who were all pleading poverty and saying the courses were dead so deals should be available come June.......

First call was to Oceanico Group to ask for availability for a 1pm tee time on our first day, we wanted to play here as its close to the airport as we land at 10am but unfortunately the course was fully booked until 4pm but I am not surprised seeing as the price was 60E including a buggy. Next I tried Victoria but sadly this was shut due to work so I didnt try any of the other Vilamoura courses as they arent that great.

So I thought I'd try Quinta do Lago and she says yep we can get you on anytime its absolutely dead on both North and South... that'll be 98E please and that doesnt include a buggy!! Fek that Im no paying 98E for a game of golf so thought i'd try Laranjal as there's bound be deals as its only been open for a year... yep its absolutely dead again, that'll be 108E without a buggy!!

We can get on to the Faldo and O'Connor course for 66E and 63E respectively which is great value considering it includes a buggy, the course and the way the staff treat you there so that is an option.

Next I phoned Penina who said yep we can get you on at 57E so I booked out first day's golf there with a 1.28 tee time. This doesnt include buggys but seeing as its our first day of the tour and we won't have any shabby laddies and the course is an easy flat walk I think that surely everyone will be able to walk it. ;)

The way I see it is the top end courses in the Quinta do lago/Vila Sol end of the Algarve are quoting crazy prices and as a result their courses are dead whereas Oceanico and all the central/western Algarve are pitching their prices at a fairer level and seem to be gaining golfers because of this so surely the high end courses need to be dropping their prices to try and fill the courses. :D

It is a shame but IMO it is getting way to expensive to golf over there unless you are content in playing shite, runn of the mill courses which we don't want to do........fek this Czech Republic here we come again 2011!! :D :D ;)

So you want to play very good courses and not pay the price...

Its about between €45-€100 in Spain + buggies per round, has been for the past 5 years, I haven't seen any really big price increases.

I'd say 16 golfers trying to play a "quiet" course is well worth a discount.

Looks like some of these places are getting 100% of Zero rather than 80% of something as a result of their intransigence :D

Have noticed this with the courses in Southern Ireland ,Ballyliffin for example we're playing the Glashedy this year and its normally 80 Euro but they have internet price of 50 Euro but my Irish mate phoned and we've got it for 45 Euro so a considerable saving on the standard green fee.
You would think in this climate they'd bite your hand of for money coming, some green fee's are better than none.

Dodger, Any chance you can give me some of the contact details for the cheaper rounds you have found? I'm going out on Thursday 20th with the wife and kids, I've managed to blag 2 rounds of golf while i'm there but I can't pay the 80euro plus buggie they are all asking if I'm playing 2 rounds, she'll kill me.

I rang a course a few months ago (can't remember the name) and the best they could do for when I was there was 85euro per person plus 45euro for the buggie. For this price I could have played any day at any time and probably play the course in any order, i got the impression they were on their arse. Anyway, I asked if there was a cheaper deal and I was told that from the 30th I could have a 2 ball including buggie for 95euro. Pitty seeing as I'd have been home by then and there was no way he would budge on bringing the offer forward

Parmo....not VERY good courses just good courses...do you feel that £100 green fee in off season when courses are usually at risk of maintenance is fair? If so on you go pal and pay it.

As DCB says zero percent of f##k all is precisely that so why the stubborness to shift....? 16 guys at 60E for golf then the ale and food we consume seems to be better than netting themselves sweet F.A. but hey what would I know I only work in that kind of industry.

In the rough.....direct contact with the courses in my experiece is the cheapest way to go.

Intransigence ........forum word of the week...I had to google it Dave...

Refusing to moderate a position, especially an extreme position; uncompromising.

Quality word and the winner of my prize for word of the week! :D

In 5 weeks the weather will be ideal in southern Europe for golf, not sure why you think its off season. Most tourist golfers go this end of the year and prices drop as the temperature rise. We normally get the best deals in peak season as they know the weather puts people off, in a buggy its no big deal as the wind cools you, but you do get the best deals.

Try any of the Pestana courses - Vale de pinta, Gramacho, Silves & Alto
They are 31,26, 25, 28 respectively after 3:30 - plenty of light till 9 at this time of the year.

Also try Salgados, Alamos & Morgado - They have deals for after 12:30 and also twilight.

Vale de pinta, Gramacho & Alamos are always in great nick!

Is this a deal? 15 of us are playing Frodsham on Friday (see thread) £30. That includes bacon barm on arrival, round of golf on a quality course, and two course meal. The courses in Portugal can FO and die on their arse for all I care. All of Europe (in the euro) are now too expensive. They've tried to run before they can walk and are now paying the price. I hope they all go bump and return to charging proper prices.

Parmo....it is off season as this is what the courses class it as!!

Peak season is classed as our winter months of usually November to March, medium being Sept,Oct,Apr and May with 'Off' being June,July and August.....suprised you didn't know this...you seem to think that prices drop during their peak season, not sure where you have been to find this but in many years of golfing abroad I have never ever seen this.

With regards to the course TerryA mention I would only go to the Gramacho/Pinta and maybe Morgado courses as the rest are in my opinion poor courses and besides teeing off at that time eats in to our night time activities! ;)

With regards to Frodsham that is what happens when clubs take all sorts of 2 for 1 tickets.....gun to the head those tickets are,the worst things to happen to golf clubs.

So you can get the best deals at this time cos the prices drop but the temp rises. but you also get the best deals in peak season because it is too hot to play???
