Yes but it was originally not cut to fairway height or less it may just have grown less than the grass on the fairway due to different agronomy. I would go back to my post #9
I would suggest the the height that the mowers are set determines the 'cut length'. The hand mower idea seems useful if the normal mowing routine does not provide sufficient distinction.

Incidentally, I have never really been certain about just what is the 'first cut' and what is the 'second cut'.

My belief is it really is an American term used by the commentators. Where I play we have fairway, then one or two mowers width of slightly longer grass then the rough which is still mown but less often. The commentators use 1st cut to mean the bit between the fairway and the rough which they call second cut.

Not sure our green staff would be willing to go up and down fairways with hand mowers and in winter there are often longish periods when the fairways etc do not get mown as the grass is not growing much anyway.

That’s exactly why they do it.
The fairways only get cut when they need it due to weather conditions.
It takes one of the guys about 6 hrs to do the 18 holes.
Gives great definition and no arguments about if your on or off.

Our place has just sent out an email saying preference lies everywhere except red stake areas. I think due to protecting the course and not playing in mud all the time.

Have you considered somewhere decent to play instead?!?!

The course is not that bad at all, it gets muddy because the course is built on old orchards and fruit farm territory. It hardly ever shuts because of rain but does get muddy.
When I listen to the topics that will be up soon, re playing off mats, winter greens etc ( none of which we do ) we get off very lightly.

I know you live as centrally in the country as possible but you really need to up your acceptable ante! Good luck with the mud trucking!

question, I played last year ? with a guy who has just started golf last year. A newbie from COVID times. Anyway, he is good, very good. He hits the ball well and with some distance. His handicap is 25 he is better than me off 15.5. But his hcap came in the last weeks of Q comps. We played in a fiddle and he said put me on 20. The lads refused saying his official hcap is his fiddle hcap. He shot 43 points and left a few out there. I said by the end of next season he will be off 13 or below. He is having lessons etc and learning the right way.
So here’s the question.
He played in the Turkey trot comp and won it with 45 points. His hcap was cut from 25 to 21. So is that done at the discretion of the club. Because I am sure it’s an NQ comp. ?

If it wasn't acceptable for handicap, the Committee can review the handicap and adjust. Shouldn't be done based on that one score. However, if they are also aware of additional info, as you are, they may justify an adjustment
