Another post another milestone. This is my 200th post and I remember when we first mentioned Project Scratch there were a lot of opinions on our chances. So I'm interested to know how you think I'll get on in year one. To help maintain a record of my journey it would be great if you could post your thoughts directly on the blog.

So by December 31st 2010 what will be my handicap?

Ta muchly,

T

Hi,
Posted on your site and have a quick question do you have a handicap already and have you played in comps last year, if not i think u will get to 18 this year as it will be the easiest cut as you will be getting .4 cut per shot for every good round.

Hi Tiger,i am also on a mission this year(join club, get handicap,go down to 18 within a year),i see no good reason why we both cant play off 18 by this time next year! Maybe we should sort out a friendly wager to see who gets there first?

Never even played 18 on a full course - 18 H/C in 1 year ???

Possible - yes.......if you live & breath Golf and have some degree of talent.

Likely - No.

My own guess is that you might achieve 24, but in the 2nd year, may come down a bundle to say 15.

Again, it all depends on your aptitude and talent.

Good luck ! Oh, and delete everyone's numbers from your phone, you dont need any distractions !!

I went from 28 to 15 the first year I played. Missed out on most improved golfer by 1 shot I think so it is possible to do. I wasn't the most gifted but I guess I was lucky ;) got to 9 in three seasons, then gave up the game when the kids came along.

I think you are missing something here matey, to get a handicap you need to be a member of a golf club with an official handicap. Most clubs end their seasons around october due to light and weather conditions. Handicaps are only genuinely affected by full length course conditions (ie competition day each week in the summer season) so really you have a few months less than you think.
I reckon around 20 with such a short period of time, you can become a decent iron striker, a great putter, good bunker player, poker straight of the tee but you will probably need to choose one of the above, you just dont have time to work on your whole game in a year.
For me, you should practice your irons off the tee and fairway, thats where most shots are made up. You can practice your putting til the cows come home in your onw house. The rest will come with practice but not in 9 (and a bit)months.
Keep er lit though and prove us wrong.

Tiger,
Looking at the clip of your swing I think there's a golfer in there but there's quite a bit of work required to get below 15. I reckon 17 is do-able this year. Depends how good your short game becomes to a large extent but I'll say 17 for 2010 perhaps a little optimistically :p.

Beginner to scratch in 5 years?

Been done before but as mentioned you need some real dedication and work. No drinking or sex the night before competition rounds and serious practise sessions, only enough time to polish your sticks and get to sleep.

Do I think you'll do it?

Not a chance, I hear alot of talk about how good people could and will be but I really enjoy being proved wrong so the best of luck to you.

There is a scratch golfer in everyone who is relativly fit and flexable but it takes alot of work to find him/her.

22 at the end of the first year. 14 end of second. 15 end of third..

My missus won't let me have sex before Lee Westwood plays, nevermind me. :(

I am in a simmilar situation myself, I picked up a club for the first time in May this year.

I am lucky that I live 5 mins walk from my club, and I can play a minimum of 3 times per week.

I set myself a goal of 28-18 h/c by October 2010.

I think your goal is realistic, however if you havent played a full 18 yet, then it wolud be difficult to benchmark your starting point.
You have to shoot around the 100 mark to be a 28 handicapper, so I guess your first target is to break 100.
It may take a while to do that, or you may get your first handicap lower than 28.

The most common peice of advice, is to work on your short game, however this is usless if you lose balls off the tee, as the most you get is 2 shots on any given hole and if you use them up you end up having to par or birdie the hole to score(unlikley at first).

This was my experience, I must add that my course is very unforgiving with each hole lined with dense woodland and bushes(hence the name BushFinder :))
I've played other courses where errant tee shots find there way onto other fairways and you can still score.

I have got to the stage now that I can get close if not on to the green in 2/3 shots(sometimes) and am really focused on improving my short game.
Hope this advice helps :)

If you're ever in London and are looking for a game, let me know and we can hack our way round my course together :)

Thanks for all your comments, really interesting as there seems to be a really polarised opinion between what I'll call the optimists and the realists. For those of you that haven't done so yet please post your opinions on the Project Scratch blog http://www.projectscratch.co.uk/predictions-please.

There does seem to be a consensus that 18-20 is a realistic aim for year one - which synchs with both mine and Bogee's ambitions. However, only time will tell...

Ideally your progress would have to be terrific in years 1 and 2 as below
28 to 18 in Year 1
18 to 10 in Year 2
10 to 5 in Year 3
5 to 2 in Year 4
2 to 0 in Year 5
I have heard the odd one doing this in a couple of years, but it is a very difficult task, so very good luck to you!!!
Keep us posted.
