Hey guys, just a quick one if anyone has had similar issues and over come it... I currently play off 5 and driving the ball pretty good and get decent carry, the odd time over 300.. I did a test using my Zepp swing analyser. I did 5 drives average club head speed was 112 mph.. Did 5 practice swings average club head speed was 119 mph, any ideas on why there is such a drop in practice swings and real swings? I've tried swinging faster with a ball in front of me and I don't get close to the numbers I get on a practice swing (highest I got was 114 mph and that felt like I couldn't go any faster but obviously I can)..)

Id get your device checked. Coz unless you play in the moon or on downhill downwind courses, your speed is about 20mph short of 300 yard carries......l

Well I had this out with the pro as well, who had me on the flight scope to show all the figures. My 7 iron distance is 180-190 depending on conditions, pitching wedge 150-160 yet My iron swing is 90 mph and with those distances it should be alot more.. His only explanation was nearly every shot my smash factor was 1.46 or more so..

Are you on tour?😂 that's some hefty figures proper forum figures 😂

Don't think you should be reaching 300 carry but 300 total should be achievable with those numbers when you catch a good one. Why be desperate to get that extra few mph that you get on a practice swing? Seems like you are hitting the ball far enough without sacrificing control by trying to squeeze an extra 5 or 10 yards.

No haha, I play off 5 but do throw a few decent under par rounds in, but as the main issue with game is wanting to smash the ball and always take the risky shot.. I can throw some 10 overs in as well ha. It was mainly just a curiosity if people have similar differences in practice swings and real swings

I've never had a practice swing measured. Think you have just confirmed in that response that it's pointless trying to your absolute max and get in lots of trouble.

Yeah, I do have a much bigger difference.

I have a swing radar and my practice swings vary from 107-120 on the radar, but my real swing is 98-102(but still going up, been doing speed training over winter). Must be down to the brain adjusting to be able to actually hit the ball and as you are thinking about?

Been on flightscope as well, and this reads almost bang on 100mph on almost all swings(was 98 a month ago)

Wierdly my son is the opposite he can swing the club faster with a ball in front of him, so not everyone is the same.

The swing speed numbers and distances are all over the place, not even worth commenting on.

However to address the discrepancy between practice swing speed and real swing speed, very simple : TENSION.

There's almost certainly more tension in your swing when you hit the ball, next time you practice have a focus on the difference in tension, grip presssure etc and try and recreate the practice swing when you hit the ball. Also pay attention to the lag, see if there's a difference.

All easier said than done by the way.

I use the Zepp and am totally opposite - practice swings slower than actual and that's even when I try to make the practice ones faster. I don't worry about it though - but then again I have no real interest in swing speed either!

I find it hard to believe that someone can swing as fast as rory when there is no ball and swing like me when there is a ball.

I'd have to see that to believe it.

pw 150 to 160

Which is it do you hit your wedge 150 OR do you hit it 160... there is a big difference, why are you giving us a range?

The numbers do not stack up, 112mph swing speed is just under pga tour average and i would estimate the average carry on tour is 270

PW 150, nope
PW 160, not even close

Your judgement, measurement, device etc is out.. those numbers do not work

http://www.pgatour.com/stats/stat.02409.html FYI avg PGA tour driver speed is 114

Ignoring the distances. The reason most people have a better practice swing is because there is not a ball to hit at. In the practice you just sweep the club through to a finish with nothing interfering with the action. When a ball is the target you will tend to hit at it and lose the smooth free flowing action of the practice. Try making your objective the end of the follow through rather than the ball, let the ball just get in the way.

Does flightscope actually measure club head speed or estimate it from ball speed and guessing a smash factor?

The reason I ask is that I've never ever EVER seen a smash factor with an iron in the 1.4's because the ball doesn't spring off the face.

That would explain the low iron speed if it's assuming a smash factor of 1.46.

I can believe the driver carry if it's on the machine as Rick Shiels fairly regularly has carries just over 300yds and his ss is around 115mph on a fast one.
Different beast altogether though to it happening on the course.
