Practice before matchplay

On the first tee in our doubles knockout one of our opponents hit two balls down the fairway with his wedge from the side of the tee. Both balls travelled over 100 yards. When I questioned him he said it is allowed in match play.

Unless there is a local rule restriction on it you can do what you like - including chipping and putting on the 18th green (as a common example) or going out and playing all 18 holes before the match.

Rule 5.2 a covers it in one line....

He's correct, it is allowed in matchplay (I think its on the basis that everyone has the same opportunity to do so, whereas they dont in strokeplay). Whether the course are as happy is a different question
