Right now the snow is getting a wee shift (before the next icy blast) we are now subjected to huge, muckle, massive bloody pot holes!!

The road to my work is a fu##ing disgrace already,I reckon the guy behind me may have thought I was pished the way I was weaving to and fro to miss the things this morning but on the way back in the dark I was obviously just clattering the bloody things!!

Does anyone know how the roads in Eastern Europe manage,do they get potted as well or is it just us again that can't cope?

It boils my pish.

Think in Eastern Europe it stays cold and drier in winter, our problem is we sit round the 0 degrees C mark so much that it's freeze/thaw/freeze/thaw cycle so any tiny crack in the road is continually weakened as more and more water works it's way in and expands as it freezes.
Roads should have a reasonable camber and be proud enough from the roadsides to let water off, unfortunately the foundation of half our roads is insufficient to carry modern lorry weights so channels form where wheels run - once you can't get the water off the road surface you're screwed.
Ample foundation, correct water-shedding shape and effective roadside drainage are key to keeping roads intact.

UK has under-invested in roads for decades and we can't afford to put them right.

Your pish could be boiling for some time, hope your bladder can cope! :p

Heard an interview with a road expert dome time ago. He said that as soon as the road surface breaks you have 7 days to fill it. After that you have to relay the road 5 metres in every direction otherwise the surface will break again within a matter of days. This is due to moisture getting in through micropores in the road surface.
I guess they're better at filling potholes in Latvia and Poland than we are.

I'm amazed the highways maintainance pixies didn't pop up the second the snow started to clear and repaired every pot hole in Scotland overnight.
Give them a chance, they're only human....actually they're not...

The roads round here are a bloody disgrace to start with. We are still dodging potholes created several years ago because the bloody council highways department simply don't fill them correctly.
I'm sorry, but chucking a shovelful of tarmac in a hole then braying it flat with the back of a shovel is NOT acceptable road repair to me! And we are not talking minor roads and tracks either. Some of our main roads are patched up as described above!

As above. The trading estate where I work is in a terrible state. It is a massive estate as well where thousands of people work and the council do absolutely nothing as far as improvements go.

but did the council adopt the roads? not always the case with industrial sites and if not they remain the responsibility of the development company
