Portugal Golf - Le Meridien Penina Golf Resort

Passed it plenty of times when staying in Alvor. Course layout looks ok but apart from the I'm next to useless.

Yes played it many a time and it is a cracking course.

It is a fairly long course and used to get fairly wet during wetter weather due to the fact it was actually built on a paddy ground but they have spent cash on upgrading the irrigation system.

Hotel is very nice too,a pal of mine went last February for a week with unlimited golf for something stupid like £300.

It is an old style course and is one of the better ones on that coast.I would think you would enjoy the whole package they have there.

As said by Hobbit,Alvor is close by and only a 5 minute taxi ride away.

Great - thanks Dodger that was just what I hoped to hear as the hotel gets good reviews on Trip Advisor but the golf is the important thing. We're thinking of going on 16th May and the net suggests nice weather then - warm but not too hot...

The big course is pretty good, although rather flat. If you are staying at Penina, though, you should be able to get a good rate at the other courses operated by Le Meridien, such as San Lorenzo, which is in the Quinta do Lago resort. That is probably the best of the courses in that area.

I haven't played the newly redone Palmares, but the old 18 was pretty good, and the new links holes look even better in pictures. That is worth a serious look.

For my money, the best course by a long shot on the entire Algarve is Monte Rei, but that is east of Faro and often rather expensive. However, you can see where all the money has gone into the course.

Can I come? Mid May would be perfect. I love the place,it is the 1st course I ever played abroad as a young laddie, the day after I had been to watch Sir Colin net his 1st tour victory at Quinta do Lago!Been back several times since and it is always really nice......only let down is expect a 4.5 to 5 hour round as it is a fair slog round.

We're on holiday - 5 hours is fine :)

Played there a few years ago and was very disappointed!
The course was pretty flat & I seem to remeber that lots of holes ran alongside each other and were clearly visible, I don't like that. I also found that, because we were not staying at the hotel, we were made to feel inconvenient and a hindrance....................will not be going back there.
However, have a pop at Palmares, it's not too far away and is a fantastic course. It's had a lot of work done since I was last there but is surely worth a visit.
Enjoy,

Slime.
