Portrush to host Open "within 5 years"

Hmm I could time it to coincide with a trip to the inlaws...just popping out dear..

With the backing of the N.I Assembly and the 3 major winners from the country that are lobbying it I'd be very surprised if they don't add it after the alterations are made. Can't see the membership voting no.

new 17th & 18th required..... which might, for a season, leave them with a 16 holer if they also do works to obliterate current final holes for tended village infrastructure.

TBH like RCD the 17th and 18th aren't the greatest or best fit with rest of course.

have a gander at google earth and be pretend course designer - how would you make a new 17 & 18 away and back from 16th?

17th tee to the right of the 16th green. Fairway plays to the right of Big Nellie with the fairway narrowing around that point and at about 270 yards brings it into play for the pros and the draw. Play towards the right of the existing 17th toward the 1st teebox on the Valley course. Par 5 around 550 yard mark. Could pull tee box forward a bit to make a carry over the bunker possible and add risk reward but I think having it at driving range and approach from right side of fairway required to make green in 2 would be interesting.

18th tee near existing 17th green site. back up current 17th fairway with dogleg right back towards the existing 18th green.

Hospitality can now take over the old 18ths site and the Valley can get a more interesting 1st and hopefully a 2nd thats as good as the current hole.

unsubstantiated speculative rumour I'd heard was use of land to right and up from calamity.... ?? maybe practice ground could be encroached on.

BBC News NI have just confirmed that the Open will be held at Royal Portrush in 2019. Announcement expected to be made by the R&A next week.

Interesting. I would have thought the R&A would have made the announcement globally so wonder where BBC NI got the story from. If it is true that would be great and I think it'll make a great venue

i would imagine it has come from either someone senior at Royal Portrush or a member of the NI Executive, both of which have been in discussions with the R&A about the Open coming here. The way they have reported it they seem certain it's a done deal.

I can't see the R&A being too happy about it being announced like that though.

R & A Press conference on Monday at Portrush is it about to be officially announced?

Now Northern Ireland is hosting the Open should Royal Porthcawl also be added to the rota to truly make it the "British Open" ?. The course has enough class to host it in my opinion

It isn't and never has been called that. It is The Open Championship.

Only Yanks and folk with no idea of the history call it "The British".

I believe the current 17th and 18th would be used for infrastructure so the holes aren't being re-designed, they are be created somewhere else?

the only thing that can blemish the open at portrush is the weather. links is at its best when its fast and running. you need to be very lucky to catch portrush baked for 4 days in a row.

I went to the irish open there and was hoping the see how the pros handled the short game links style. all the did was fire right at the pin with the soft greens. even spinning the ball back to the hole. ruined it for me! :(

other than that, fire away, great for n.ireland!
