Plodding on....... When really you want to walk off.

i think it was just one of them days, need to find a clear head for sunday again

nope, it was to all intents and purposes a medal round - and life is a little different when they come around.

well technically our once a month society is also a medal and im always 36pts or there about off 16.

forgive me, I don't wish to be Mr Pedantic (who am I kidding!) but medal isn't points, that's Stableford, medal is number of shots taken, gross and net.

and forgive me for miss understanding medal term.

Got that. I'm with you so far...

Next hole, par 5. Tricky tee shot in as much as you daren't block it out right 'cos there is some long jungle grass (and we're talking Japanese Soldier stuff) down that side. Trees tight to the left, so got to be fairly straight. Pulled out the trusty G10 and gave it a whack, but with my closed stance and an exaggerated attempt at turning my hands over for the draw I hit an awful duck hook down the left. I honestly thought I had gone out of bounds, but when we got down there I was about 3 yards inside the treeline in the rough. I couldn't really get much of a backswing but decided (as the fairway stretched out in front of me some 30 yards below) to punch a little hybrid down. Unfortunately I hurried my swing a little and only managed to top the ball about 10 yards or so forward. Feeling a bit annoyed with myself, I pulled out a 6 iron and gave it a nice belt, which saw it head down towards the 150 markers.
150 out, nice lie, bunker in front of the pin I had to fly. Perfect contact. Too perfect. Flew the bunker, hit the green and clattered down the slope at the back. Having played 4 I was desperate to get up and down but despite hitting a nice chip up onto the dance floor I failed to single putt and walked off with a very disappointing 7 for 1.......
You still there?

This is why I laugh (not at you personally, but your post just reminded me) at guys who don't ever play in comps, yet say they have a handicap of 12. Any one can knock it round 12 over, playing for a laugh, but to do it, card in hand, name in the book, off the back sticks is harder than it looks.

Welcome to real golf.

Tell me about it. :) :D

Oh yes. This is rivetting stuff. Wouldn't miss it for the world.

I told you it was like Homers blog.
Anyway, on with the show...
Next hole, shortish par 4. Quite a nice hole, straight up with severe mounding both sides of the fairway, pond at about 300 protecting the green.
I hit a reasonable 3 wood up the right hand side but found the first cut and was on the upslope of one of the mounds. Ball was sitting nicely but there was a massive great oak tree in front of me that I had to get up and over (as well as the pond) and I reckoned an 8 iron would do the job.
Struck it as sweet as a nut, one of the nicest iron shots I have hit for ages. Cleared the tree and pond and I could see through the branches (the flag was hidden by the tree) that my ball had come down close. Feeling really chuffed with myself I went over the bridge and saw my ball about 8 or 9 feet from the pin. Happy days. Lined up the birdie putt but just missed. Luckily I left myself a gimme for 3 points and was now level 2's for the round and feeling better.
I hope I'm not boring you?

Bad luck Oddsocks.

Although I'm a fine one to talk, it's really tough "early days" and if you played to 20, that's not so bad given the situation.

My club put me off 11.5 (best round 14 over SSS) and it took me ages to get even close. In my 2nd year I had a 74 (+5 SSS) one afternoon in May (2009) off the whites playing with a committee member. He was bigging me up in the clubhouse saying I should play for the h'cap team and what have you, but I knew it was just a lucky day. It's easy to have a lucky day with nothing at stake....I do it all the time.
I don't get nervous and my game doesn't desert me; it's just very hard to keep it going for 18 holes, especially with the hardest par3 in the county looming up at the 17th.

The good news is that the "club members" decided (against the wishes of the owner) to cut down the tree that was causing so much trouble on this hole.....at least you can slice it over the lake now, which is good, as you can't go left...it's OOB. :)

well a little, it's those that go wrong that stimulate the imagination.

now, just let me tell you about the eigth, a shorter par 3, slightly elevated green . . . . . .

Boring? Never. Got 55 minutes left before leaving to do some decorating. Keep going....

Sorry mate. Some young girl has just come in looking at the Mini Cooper cabrio that I have on the front. Brunette, legs up to her armpits and she wants me to value her Peugeot 206. Just got to go and have a letch...sorry look at it and do an appraisal. I'm just limping out the back now.
If my old ticker can stand it I'll carry on tonight.

There is still a world of difference playing a society do with some mates and pegging it up in a medal round with someone you barely know and realising that every shot counts. At least once you get the handicap sorted you'll know the pit of the stomach feeling a medal round normally induces on the 1st tee.

Smiffy, keep it going - I'm picking up some tips here and so my next blog entry will be a doozy and dedeicated to you without whom I wouldn't have been able to raise my writing! And I'm enjoying your trip to sniper country!

Homer: I can see exactly whats gonna happen, 1st round crap, a couple of medioka ones if im lucky, handicap is gonna come back 17/18, play the first medal and romp in with stupid score and get myself a bad name..

Dave, to be honest ive taken from it what i can, i was attacking the front of the greens that were rock hard (wrong... play short and hope for a good bounce) hitting clubs from tee's on the longer par 4's that put me in the worong positions (noted for sunday change of clubs, driver may even stay indoors)

I think another killer which is my biggest pet hate was from the 4th we was held on every shot by a 3 ball that wouldnt let the quicker 2 ball through, so the round become very long winded and didnt really get a flow going, this has always unsettled me and i hope sunday this one happen.

I will say though the course yesterday was there worst ive ever seen it, fairways are burnt dry, greens very patchy but im guessing they will be cut this week ready for the medals this weekend. alof of the tee's were burnt out aswell but im guessing new tee positions for sunday will all change this,.

i.m.o. you're getting way ahead of yourself.

3 weeks back, I played Mon/Wed/Fri. I played to +9, +5 and +8. Went out on Sunday in the stableford and scored....?

Medals are always slow. Another thing that makes them tough. Often end up waiting 10 minutes to play the par threes.

As I said, welcome to real golf.

I'm not getting this.

You have an unofficial handicap of 16. You play with the handicap secretary and play to 20.....where's the disaster?

Most people won't play to their handicap every time they play. Take a look on the HDID website, and have a look at some competition scores. I think you expectations are whey to high.

4 over handicap........you might as well throw your clubs away now. :p

Rgdave, 32 points?

murph.. so the welcome i dont like this real golf rubbish, its gonna cost me a fortune in balls. After losing 3 prov's last night i finished the round with a noodle.... it was that bad. Man them things never stop into greens
