Playing the wrong ball

Hopefully my understanding of this was correct not that it really matters as was just a bounce game but this happened today.

Played 3rd shot from rough to the left of the green on to green, and then 2 putts for a 5. Moved to next tee and realised i had a srixon 1 soft feel in my hand but not my srixon 1 soft feel as didnt have my initials on it. Went back to spot and there was my ball so added 2 shot penalty and then up and down for a 6.

In matchplay i believe i would of lost hole but think what i did to be correct as i hadnt teed off on the next hole.

Also believe i only get penalised once for having 3 strokes with the wrong ball?

Yes, the strokes with the wrong ball don't count. Rule 15-3

I'm sad like that as i track every round but it was more to prove i wasn't going mad to be honest as it was the exact ball type and number as playing partners were like it must be yours. It was probaly only 30 yards away also.
