Anyone who has the attitude of "I'll recline my seat if I want to" without any consideration for the person behind pretty much sums up the selfish society we are living in today. 9 flights to and from the US in the last year, unfortunately on 3 of those I could not get the extra legroom seating, twice due to loosing my seat as my flight got cancelled and another was simply because none where left. On a couple of those flight I had people turn round to see how much they could recline, to unfortunately find a big lump like me behind.

On one flight some big old woman (that struggled to get into her seat) without any consideration for someone behind just slammed her seat back onto my knees. I politely asked her to put her seat up a bit and she just ignored me. I asked again in a rather sterner voice and she informed me that she would get a flight attendant if I spoke to her like that again. So I got one instead and told her the problem, fortunately there was a spare seat down in premium economy and I got moved to that, I just gave the ignorant woman a cheeky smile and said thanks for getting me a better seat, she looked gutted :ears:

What a educational answer , i wasnt aware you could book or request a seat behind a seat that doesnt recline , ya learn something new every day , well i just did any how , that the way forward for me .. Ta for the heads up

Personally i let mine back a fraction so its just off vertical , i never recline it fully

They could have booked a seat in business/premium/first etc where the person in front reclining the seat they have paid for wouldn't impact them.

Flying the long haul back and from NZ pretty much everyone reclines , so not a great issue.

Short haul here, tend to leave as is. If the person in front wants to recline, I'd would turn round and ask behind if it was ok for me to recline too if I was struggling for leg room.

Plane seat designers should put the seats on rails, so that those of us who always have loads of legroom could offer to move our seats forwards to the benefit of the people behind ;)

Fly business class - you can recline your chair all the way back then :D

Nice one Phil, great advice. The only problem being flying from the US back home is around £900 premium economy, or £4000 in business, should go the hog and go first class at around £9000

I was joking - I'll get me coat :(

I went on one of first Virgin Atlantic flights to Newark back in 1984 it cost £99 return from London with reclining seats.

Its OK to recline after a suitable period of time. After around an hour and a half when people have had their meal and can relax. People that push the seat back after take off without consideration deserve tall peoples knees digging in their backs.

Why exactly should my knees have to suffer because of somebody else's lack of etiquette?

I didnt suggest they should. My point was that on long flights it's not so bad after takeoff and the meal when most people tend to try and get some sleep and almost everyone reclines their seat. maybe it would be better if there was an announcement that banned reclining and another that said when it was acceptable. I would also suggest that seats should not be physically able to recline by an amount that interfered with the person behind.
