Ping Irons

to upright the heel digs in and turns the clubface over and you lose shots right (for a leftie) supposedly

It's actually more to do with the fact that because of the loft, as you tip the club back (i.e. raise the toe) the face will point left (right for a left hander). Ball will go that way even if hit clean e.g. off a tee. Effect is very obvious if you stick a pencil on the face with some blue tac and see where it points. The face is only square to the target line when the sole is flat to the ground.

Definitely worth trying something closer to the right angle and seeing what happens.

Wow, thanks!! Makes it a lot clearer

yes mashie niblick is correct, the club hits the ball first so there is no turning over of the club as if the club impacts the ground before the ball.

get your clubs' lie angle checked, American Golf's opinions on a static fitting don't count for anything.

Looking at the Ping chart, I'd be going back and questioning the fit, assuming for a second you aren't unusually tall or have exceptionally long arms. http://www.golf-rescue.com/image/PING_Color_Code_Chart.pdf

That seems a very upright fit and if you are playing well with what you have, I'd be tempted to ignore what you've been shown and carry on unless you can find a Ping fitter somewhere and try a purple dot out and compare on a monitor. I don't think the purple will improve your game

Hey

I bought a set of Ping i20 irons a couple of years ago. They were a very good price and I knew they were no the correct dot for me but I was relatively new to golf so didn't really care.

I've been playing well with them and currently off my lowest handicap (10) and even just had my first win in a medal (net 61).

Was in American Golf yesterday and thought I would get fitted to see what dot I should be using.
They have told me I should be playing purple dot. My irons are green dot!!!!!!! So just the 5 dots out!!!

Now im wondering what to do?!?! its not like im hacking it about the course currently but would obviously like to play better...
do I send them back to ping to get them adjusted? How long would that take? With the season kicking into gear I wouldn't like to be clubless for long.....

Cheers

If you are prepared to take them to Ping's factory in Gainsborough, Lincs, they will do them while you wait FOC. Otherwise by return of post. You will have to pay the postage there and they will charge you for the postage back.

Okay, its like you have seen me play!!!! if tend to draw it but there are pulled shots right. Don't think ive ever missed a green left....

The draw isn't because of the heel digging. The heel doesn't dig off a tee peg but will still go left. It is because too upright effectively closes the face. Imagine a club soled properly. Let the handle fall towards the ground, the club is now too upright and the face is very closed. The same happens when you play off an uphill lie.

Beware the static lie fitting. On static lie I need 1 degree flat but on dynamic I need 2 degrees upright. A Callaway fitter pointed out to me that using a lie board can be misleading. He marked a vertical line on the ball and put an indicator pad on the club face and it showed the club was getting a bit toe down at impact.

So i've decided to bite the bullet and get new irons with the right fit!!!

Old set up on ebay. Hopefully there is a green dot left hander in the next week looking a change of irons....
