Hey

I bought a set of Ping i20 irons a couple of years ago. They were a very good price and I knew they were no the correct dot for me but I was relatively new to golf so didn't really care.

I've been playing well with them and currently off my lowest handicap (10) and even just had my first win in a medal (net 61).

Was in American Golf yesterday and thought I would get fitted to see what dot I should be using.
They have told me I should be playing purple dot. My irons are green dot!!!!!!! So just the 5 dots out!!!

Now im wondering what to do?!?! its not like im hacking it about the course currently but would obviously like to play better...
do I send them back to ping to get them adjusted? How long would that take? With the season kicking into gear I wouldn't like to be clubless for long.....

Cheers

I'd leave them for now, but obviously get fitted the next time you do upgrade your sticks!

You are obviously a very good player if they're off for your height and you're doing that well with them!

Have you had a go with purple dot irons? If not, give them a whirl and see if the results suggest changing would be worth considering. It's not like your current irons aren't getting the job done.

Notice in your signature you've got Mizuno irons. Have you recently switched back to the Pings? Were the Mizuno's fitted? Which do you hit better?

As suggested, try out maybe one club on the purple, and compare with your Green dots, base your decision on that really.

My signature is a few years out of date. No longer have any of those clubs in the bag lol.
I do still have the mizzy irons in the cupboard. They weren't fitted either, another ebay purchase from the early days.

I hit the pings better than the mizzys but that's prob because Im a more consistent player now than I was.
If I sent the pings back to get adjusted I could switch back to the mizzys. But I have quite a few matches for the club team coming up so im torn....

I haven't swing a purple dotted club. they had me swing with a yellow dot in the shop then looked at the marks on sole of the club to tell me I should be purple.
Might go back and see if they have a purple demo club. I am a leftie tho so they may not have.

You have to send them back to Ping to be adjusted however not sure they will be able to adjust the full 5 dots.

If not keep them and treat yourself to new ones

Were the marks on the paper still towards the heel when you got fitted? Is there a big gap under the toe of the club at address at the moment? (should be able to slide a 2p coin under the toe at address, not 16p worth?

If it were me, I would go to a Ping fitting centre, and have a fitting taking your clubs with you. Only then would I choose a path to take, which for me would probably be sendinig them back to Ping to have adjusted and re colour coded, if needed.
I would not be trusting what AG are saying though, go through a dedicated Ping fitting centre.

Yeah the marks on the paper were very much towards the heel. and that was with the yellow dot and not the greens I have.
I haven't looked at what mine is like at the moment. Must have a look later.

So what would having such badly fitted clubs be doing to my game?

If anything, clubs that are too upright would cause you to miss right (you said you were left handed). The heel will dig and the club will turn over at impact. Does that tend to be your miss?

to upright the heel digs in and turns the clubface over and you lose shots right (for a leftie) supposedly

Okay, its like you have seen me play!!!! if tend to draw it but there are pulled shots right. Don't think ive ever missed a green left....

Sounds like you do need to be flatter then although I would go about halfway to begin with as it is a big change. Where are you based as Ping will fit you for lie and adjust them while you wait at their fitting centre in Gainsborough?

From Belfast. would need to send them away. Anyone an idea what sort of turnaround that is?
