Am looking at changing my current set to a set of i15's. Would like to hear from people who have a full set and what their thoughts are to date. Borrowed a 7 iron for a week and it seemed nice off the club face, but would like to know what the long and short irons are like.

Am also booked in for a fitting session at Gainsborough in the new year (unless i can get a cancellation prior) and would welcome people's expeirences on Ping's custom fitting and whether it really does make a difference and also what to expect on the day.

It has probably changed a lot, flipping hope so, When I went years ago the fitter got me to hit a mat and then checked the sole of my irons for the mark. He then proceeded to put the club in a vise and whack the bottom of my beloved irons with a large nylon mallet until he had the correct lie. He then painted the dot a different colour and sent me on my merry way. That was it.

I was seriously looking at the I15's recently when I decided to get a better player type club (having found to my endless disappointment that I couldn't hit the TM TP's). In the end it was down to the I15's and X22 pros until I saw a set of R9's at an AG from the TM rep. I tried them and fell in love. If they hadn't been there I think I'd have had the I15's by now. Very forgiving but long and a good ball flight (better than the G15 by miles). Never used their fitting centre but it has had good reviews both in GM and Todays Golfer over the months.

I use to be firmly in the C/F camp but a number of negative reports recently has meant that my mind is more open to the fact that for a lot of golfers off the peg is actually not going to be a bad choice.

Hi
Ive been to Gainsborough twice for fittings the first time to get new irons the second for woods and wedges

They staff there know what they are talking about , will spend loads of time with you and are happy to help in any way
My advice would be to go with an open mind and try anything that they suggest there may be something you havent considered that suits you better

Ping? Why?

Don't do it! Save yourself, sod the women and children, get out while you still can.

Custom fit is a good thing. It can sort out shaft spec, lie anle, grip size, whether you can hit your chosen head type, all sorts.

I was between stiff and regular dynamic gold, and kind of figured a set of rifles would bridge it. Junk. Couldn't hit them for love or money. Hit the DG R300s marginally better than the S300s, so they were for me. Don't regret it either. You will only find this out through c/fit.

Go for it.

But Ping?

I've been fitted twice by Ping.First was for the i3 irons about 6 years ago, and about two years ago for G10 woods and S58 irons. The latter being at the Ping Fitting Centre at St.Andrews (no longer there).

And sadly, both turned out to be disasters.

I have also been fitted by Mizuno and they are absolutely superb.Go to a proper Mizuno Fitting Centre and I can promise you you won't regret it.I recently got MP52 irons fitted with Dynamic Gold High Launch shafts (extra stiff) and now I'm peppering pins all over the place.

I'm also hitting the ball with a much more penetrating ball flight.

Rich - I was lucky enough to get the full treatment at Gainsborough in August courtesy of GM. They really know their stuff there, and I'm absolutely positive you'll find a ton of stuff out about what suits you. I've always been a Ping fan anyway - I chose the G15's over the I15's because of better (more consistent) dispersion stats that were clear to see on the day. That said, I still believe the I15 is better looking.

I use to be sceptical about Ping stuff (it was on my black list along with Titleist) but love the I15. I wasn't really going to give them a try as I found the G10 chunky and horrid which put me off the G15 and therefore the I15 by association. I tried the G15 and my fears were confirmed. Hated it but the I15 was a much more powerful club with very good flight and distance and not as ugly to look down on as Pings of old.

I can mirror you straight back with Mizuno. I had a disaster with Mizuno custom fit when I ordered a set of MP60's. I am not blaming the custom fit, I believe that I just made a poor choice when I didnt really know what I was looking for irons wise at that time. Being a Ping man most of my days I went liping back licking my wounds to a set of c/f I5's. Since going back to Ping I have never looked back. I was also c/f at St Andrews and also went back for a Ping driver custom fit which was again spot on.

I have since had another two sets of Ping irons all c/f.

I believe that you are wrong to openly state that Mizuno c/f is superior or better than Ping or any other manufacturer for that matter. Its all about deciding what clubs you like, tying them and fitting them. I dont see the point in buying a set of c/f Mizuno or whatever if in your eye and head they dont look right and they're not what you want.

Hi I hit the I15 at Gainsborough in August just before it was released and it was brill
straighter than my current and 20yard more carry
might be a bit different on course !!
only reason I didnt buy it there and then was that my D2 was only a year old and I couldnt afford the fairway woods and the driver

But I would get one tomorrow if I could afford it

My pro has just got himeself an I15 with a pured shaft and he's hitting it great. I've hit the I15 with the standard regular flex shaft and didn't like it. There again I must be one of of the few on here that couldn't get on with either the G15 or the G10 model either.

I'm only commenting based on my own personal experiences.

I have had two sets of Ping irons and never been comfortable with them.On both occasions I was fitted with a stiff shaft and been fighting a high ball flight and a hook.

When I went to Mizuno I was fitted with an extra stiff shaft and now I am able to swing naturally with confidence.I have been knocking it round in par or a couple over regularly. In one round I hit 15 greens in regulation.

My point is that I was never even given an extra stiff shaft to try at Ping. It's as though they think you can't possibly be good enough so they won't even waste their time trying (even although I'm a Category 1 golfer).

My other gripe with Ping was that there were only really two different shafts to choose from - The Ping AWT or ZZ65, both of which were very similar. To be fair to them though I see there is more choice with the i15.When I went to Mizuno there were about 10 different shafts available.

I can't comment on either Ping or Mizuno as I've never been fitted although I am surprised at your comments regarding Ping as they seem to have something of a thorough reputation. I kow that a lot of guys rate Mizuno and that when HTL went for his fitting he was amazed at the number of shaft options available. I think Smiffy had a similar experience

I wouldn't have thought Ping would have deliberately not allowed you to try an extra stiff shaft so maybe there was a lack of communication. I'm guessing they actually have such a shaft available as part of their fitting options

I tried the Rapture /i15/ g15 drivers the other week. I found the G15 abit weak probabaly down to the shaft, the Rapture i loved, such a solid strike and pentrating ball flight. The i15 looks fantastic but i struggled to get it airborne to be honest!!

Personally prefer the feel of TM drivers to all these though.
