Ping G15 Wedges

have you not considered specialist wedges? i have the burner 2.0 irons (so similar GI iron to G15) and i had the SW,GW and LW which were a bugger to find!!! after using them for a while found them too chunky and went for a specialist wedge in the end with a 52 and 56 vokey replacing the 50/55/60 i had in burner 2... wedge play has already improved dramatically!

They will be termed "U wedge" for utility (50ish degrees), and L for lob. I was like you trying to get all the clubs the same but after unsuccessfully sourcing a U wedge for sane monies I took the plunge and bought second hand vokeys on the bay, glad I did as the lob wedge in particular is much more workable than the bulky G15s. I've recently changed my sandwedge and pitching wedge from the set for "better" clubs for the same reason, don't get me wrong I'm not knocking the 15s for a second, mine are going nowhere, I just found them too one-purpose for around the greens.

Have you asked a PING retailer to check if PING will still supply them? If not, they will supply the G20's to the same spec. You won't notice the difference. I was quoted about £65 to add the U wedge to my set of G20's.

Thanks everyone.

Looks like specialist wedges is the route then!!!!

Just a shame that 6 months ago I bought my G15s which included 3 iron to SW.

-The 3 and 4 iron aren't in my bag
-I never use my 5 iron
-I want a gap wedge (50*) and lob wedge (58*) but would feel more comfortable if my SW was the same brand as these clubs, which would mean dropping the SW from the bag

So essentially, I have spent £310 on 5 clubs which are used. Tempted to sell the set!

3 & 4 are a doddle to hit in the g range, don't dismiss them once the swing is solid ;)

+1. I just recently dropped the 3i but the 4 is going nowhere and for a while I hit the 3i lovely off the tee, just wasn't getting any extra distance over the 4 off the turf. There's nothing wrong with the G15 sandwedge in so far as its designed to get you out, and it doesn't need to match your wedges unless you intend to use it as another gap. The G15 PW is 45*, so were you to get a 52 and 58 this would be almost perfect 6 degree gapping. The 54 sandwedge can stay in the bag if all you're going to do is play out of the sand with it, obviously if you play it from distance then going 45, 50, 54, 58 will give you 4 degrees.

Also - no need to spend the earth on new vokeys, there are lots of good wedges around, cleveland, MD, and your set can be picked up for price of one new one if you hit the bay with a little patience. Good condition red logo Vokey should be around £35, in comparison to many clubs they don't break the bank. I know what you're syaing as I'm not using my full set either but the G15s will hold reasonable resale value for a while yet so don't despair!

So I visited my local (large) American Golf today to try out some wedges.

They only had one 50* wedge in stock, which was a Rocketballlllzzzz thing.

Even looking at Direct Golf, they only stock one 50* wedge (a CG16).

I didn't realise that this was such a rare loft to carry in your bag!!!

I was hoping to try before I buy, but it now looks like I'm just going to have to buy and hope for the best based on reviews.

A lot of folk opt for the PW ~46, gap 52, lob 58. If you have your heart set on 50 and have the patience for it you could probably pick up something decent on ebay, long time to go in this but a lovely club and closer to your G15s than say a Vokey, which I might advise against at this stage (probably better off with a cavity/muscle back in the Gap for now). For the lob wedge I'd seriously think about getting something more workable, again type "wedge 58" into the bay and limit to Golf and you'll face no end of options, can always buy cheap and upgrade if you get on with it.

Thanks Curls.

It's not that I have my heart set on a 50 degree, it's that it's the logical choice when my PW and SW are 45 and 54 respectively. Like I previously said, I'm not dropping the PW and SW out the bag particularly considering I spent a lot last year on my irons and they are working a treat, particularly at the short end of the bag.

Just find it strange that there aren't many 50* wedges about and why Ping made the PW and SW the lofts they did in the G15 range.

Might be worth looking out for a 'U' wedge in the same model as your irons.

If you're looking at a 50 in a blade-ish type club, you might find the distance you hit it won't sit nicely in the middle of your current Ping wedges.
A friend of mine replaced his Ping SW with a Vokey, and the Vokey goes 15yds less than the Ping club.

No worries, Ping and a few other manufactures tend to make "strong" lofts, look out for other brands that do the same, for instance you might find Callaway wedges closer to the G15s and they do an Approach wedge labelled "A wedge", double check that it is 50 but thats another option closer than clevelend/vokey blades which as Region rightly points out are going to behave very differently.

Latest news: AG haven't phoned Ping and have been told that they have some UW heads and shafts in their factory. Awaiting a call back with a ridiculous price.
