Phone boxes

End of another British icon ?
One near us has signs on it saying it's being removed

I'm rather ambivalent about them. Iconic yes, but for a good number of years, most of them have only been used as urinals.

I guess you could buy it. Use it as an outdoor cocktail cabinet in your garden? Of the two nearest us, one has been a library for about 10-12 years, and the other is a mini art gallery..

The one in the town centre is used to house the defibrillator, but still keeps getting vandalised.

Ive seen loads around Worcester taken over by the local community for defibs, book exchanges, childrens art displays!

Get the community together and save the phone box!

I'm quite nostalgic about these kind of things but in reality, they are now something that no longer really fulfill their original use. I can't remember the last time I used one to be honest but I will still be sad to see them go.
There will be people who will still keep them going, for others uses purely for nostalgia.

As a phone box they are redundant now, and only used as a toilet or street girl advertising venue. I have seen a few turned into ATM’s though.
But now in the current climate of anger,I would have thought someone might look at them as an opportunity as a street side safe box. They are heavy and substantial enough, you could refurbish them instal a direct to police communication link, security camera so that whoever enters the box is seen and recorded, perhaps a lock that can only be activated from inside the box to lock the door. I would have thought something like that would make a big impact on the female feeling of safety out on the streets, or anyone TBH.

We still have one opposite the Post Office. I cannot remember if it is still has a phone in though.

I remember when they switched to phone cards and getting really annoyed when my phone card with a good amount of credit on it stopped working.

A mate of mine bought one when they first started to be replaced. He put it in his hallway, put plants in it. It was a nice feature.

My SiL was in one phoning home to her mum when at university. The converstation went as follows:

Hi mum, how are you are?
Fine, how are you doing?
That's odd, I can smell smoke. Aarrgh, someone has set fire to the phone box, have to go..........

Dead line. Mobile phones are so much easier.....

So a panic room on the high street .
Must have pros and cons .
But a very good idea.
