Peter Alliss

So you are saying that Allis slaged off a dead golfers Mum live on telly and all the vultures and news hounds missed it, but you heard it, do you hear voices often?

Again if it was said in the manner you are saying I doubt he would be working - I cant imagine he just said "ar well life goes on" on hearing that she had died as I have heard Peter Allis talk of death on many occasions and he is always compassionate and it usually ends in the comment that they will be sorely missed.

Perhaps it's that the 'old guard' learnt their art on radio commentary where you had to be able to paint the picture with words.
Why do you need to be able to 'paint the picture with words' for TV commentary? We can all see what's going on. :)

Yes but if it was that simple why have a commentary at all if you can see whats going on
To give a bit of opinion and insight...to explain what's going on for those watching who aren't as familiar with golf as we are, to analyse players' swings. The list goes on.

Someone earlier mentioned Dan Maskell as an example of a highly respected old-school commentator. The beauty of his commentary was that he could sum up what was going on in just a phrase here or there. He didn't have to paint a picture with words...he let the game speak for itself.

Dan Maskell was a great inspiration to me as a junior at Wimbledon Common where he was a member. He was a great supporter of our juniors and the great thing was he talked exactly as he commentated. He could make ordering a round of tean and toast seem almost poetic. I had to stifle a childish giggle once when I holed and outrageous putt and he looked at me and went "oooh I say what a peach" as though I'd served an ace on centre court. Great man

Peter Alliss has always been around since I've been watching golf. I did like Alex Hay too.
There's not many I'd prefer to hear doing the com' but Ken seems ready should the spot need filling.
Alliss does come out with some faux pas and often looses the plot a little with his ramblings, but he's a good guy i.m.o.
