Peter Alliss

He is 78 now!
He is a star though, just the right pitch for me.

it's worrying though isn't it?
we have had some real 'superstar' commentators in most sports, (eg Arlott, Maskell, Alliss) but I have no real confidence that any of the current crop really have what it takes.
Perhaps it's that the 'old guard' learnt their art on radio commentary where you had to be able to paint the picture with words.

I mentioned a few days back that I thought this entourage of co-commentators were the BBC's way of finding a replacment for Alliss by giving them all some experience. Apart from Brown who has done his apprenticeship and has probably learnt loads from working with Sky the others are all woeful.

What happens when Alliss retires? I think Brown will be the main man unless they can poach someone from elsewhere. Either way it won't be as good and I agree that Torrance in particular has no idea about painting a picture. James at least calls it as he sees it but Cotta and Grady are poor

I read somewhere (twitter?) he had gone over to a US outfit to 'fill in for someone'. I guess Watson, who would have expected to be out by final day. We then had the US guy for a while this morning to fill in the gap. He came across well, - nice holiday if beeb paid for him to stand in!

Missed most of today's coverage but got back for the final stages. I've heard Jay Townsend on one or two commentaries so was it him, Ali?

Don't know what his pedigree is but I think he's pretty good, certainly the best of the Americans and not afraid to call a spade a shovel.

Jim Nantz from ABC was the american fill-in, he was at Turnberry on holiday watching the golf and agreed to do a fill-in. And despite imagining he goes for a lie down Aliss goes and does a fill-in on US tv during his breaks.

Used to love the soothing voice and wit of Dave Marr (RIP).

Why do you need to be able to 'paint the picture with words' for TV commentary? We can all see what's going on. :)

Yes but if it was that simple why have a commentary at all if you can see whats going on

All Peter Allis did was basically tell him its the same for everyone stop whingeing and to get on with it, and also pointed out that pro golfers no longer play for the dinner anymore, and are in danger of becomeing primadonas like our footballers, all true.
