Over the last week or so, a large proportion of the time where I click on a link that should then open up a new website I get a screen come up saying "Server not found, Firefox cant find the server at xyz.com"

Im connected to the broadband fine and other sites are still working and dont think Ive changed any settings/permissions.

Can anyone tell me what might be causing this and how to stop it happening please?

Could be a problem with the site itself or a problem with firefox.

to test use chrome or IE and put the web address in manually (or cut n paste from the shortcut)

If nothing works then either the server is down or you are trying an incorrect address.

However if one of the other browsers works, then its a firefox problem

:)

I do not use FF but know AOL are advertising a new version when I log in.
I had similar issue with Opera a few months back (couldn't get on to Lottery site and had to use Chrome), downloaded the latest version of Opera and worked fine again.

You could try making sure your Firefox is the latest version.

I always use Firefox and can confirm that the likely reason for your error message is that your Virus software or firewall is preventing Firefox from using the internet. Check the exclusions on the virus software and allow Firefox through.

Don't be too quick to blame your technology. There has been unusually high web traffic in recent weeks thanks to Christmas so it may be slow at the server end simply due to congestion on the popular websites and telephone lines.

Maybe someone has changed the security settings in Firefox so you can longer visit the mucky sites. Just change to back from 'High' to 'Low, I want to view everything, including the specialist adult sites.' ;)

Never knew the GM forum, my home golf clubs website and the BBC travel page were "mucky sites" - you learn something every day :D

The first 2 are fine, but the BBC travel page is pure filth as it can make 4chan look like the Church of England web site home page
