Paul Lawrie to Miss US Open

Interesting theory. I can see what he is saying in that he feels he will earn more RC points in Germany the following week.

But why is the RC the be all and end all of his seasons objectives?

If I was ranked 43 in the world I would want to play in all of the majors and be in contention (much like Lawrie was at Augusta, without ever really threating to win). :mmm:

It's nice that the Ryder Cup is so important to him that he bases his schedule on it. On that level I hope he makes it, but having only just broken back into the Worlds Top 50 it seems bizarre that he would choose to miss a major.

Especially as Wiki is telling me he hasn't even played at the US Open since 2004

Not sure I agree it shows a lot of ambition, but he probably realises that a 8 hour time difference playing on a course that is famously tricky with a lot of local knowledge needed is not the most likely prospect and he will probably score more rC and OWGR points elsewhere. Perhaps he tried to get into the previous week's event and was turned down for a sponsor's invitation so decided not to bother.

Personally I think it's a shocking decision, gaining more points by playing lesser (easier) events in my eyes is almost like saying he's playing for money not wins, majors are where it's at and granted the Ryder Cup is huge it ain't bigger than any major.

So by acknowledging he probably won't do well there its not a huge leap to saying he doesn't believe he can compete against golfers that he will be up against in the Ryder Cup. I can see his logic but its disappointing to hear a potential Ryder Cupper saying he doesn't think he's good enough to play golf against his peers just because the course is a little different.

It has fairways, bunkers and greens. So just what is so, so different?

Time will tell.
I can see where he's coming from, the US Open is notoriously tricky and he'd have to play his socks off to do well, whereas the BMW does probably hold more chance of points for him.
It's disappointing that he's not going but he's made his choice of goal for the season.

If he goes and wins the BMW and qualifies for the RC then his point will be proven.

Some/most pro's would give their right **** to play in a Major and he says no thanks to maybe get some more Ryder cup points:confused:

erm Paul, if you do really well at the very hard US Open you might get picked regardless of how many points you have, plus its a MAJOR............I think he'll regret this decision one day

Well done Paul. Tell em Yanks where they can stick their Open. For years we've put up with them not coming over the pond to play The Open.

I salute your stance and can't wait to see you pumping it right into them at the Ryder Cup.

I dont think Paul Lawrie will qualify for the Ryder Cup anyway and TBH i'd laugh up my cuff if someone from Europe like Quiros or Rock pipped him for a slot because of their performance at the US Open.

I'm sure he'd be quite happy to congratulate them if they did so.

Got to respect his decision. At least he's got a passport that lets him decide, unlike quite a lot of the Americans.

Whether it turns out to be a good one or not? Time will tell. As a Major winner already who doesn't think he'll be competitive at Olympia (so wouldn't be!), Ryder Cup qualification probably holds greater attraction for him.

I think Paul is totally focussed on the Ryder Cup this year.
US captain DL3 made some cruel remarks after Lawrie won at Carnoustie.
I think Paul is determined to play to stuff his words down his throat.
He would be a valuable team player IMO.
Should be a future captain.

Moral of the story.
Never insult a Highlander, they have long memories.

That does put a different slant on things, I didnt think of that.

Still think his decison is wrong though

I don't buy that - DL3 cleared it up with PL yonks ago at an Open when they played together, he said he never made those comments...non story.

And I'm sure Aberdonians will be even more insulted at being called Highlanders!
