If you have an idea for an invention how do you find out if its been patented without giving the idea away?

You get specialist advice, which you are unlikely to get here. You can check public records from patent offices, but there may be other patents in consideration, so you need to secure the IP on your invention/idea as fast as you can.

If it is a V shaped thing to help putting, I am sorry to say that one has gone already!

Also be aware that a good idea is not a good product and there may be a lot of money, time and hair pulling in between the two.

Thanks for the replies. It is only an idea at the moment, hardest consideration is how much time and effort do you invest in producing something that maybe already exists. The thing is all the logical names you could have for this idea don't reveal anything with web searching.

According to Bobs link if I tell anyone I have to kill them!

Is it an expensive process?

well just checked for a friend who has an idea and its prob about £6000 for international so not huge if you have a beezer of an idea. His is just brilliant and simple, then we did a search and found a small USA company who have a similar idea but havent brought it to market after 4 years of research.

very few ideas are new, some are just a modern approach to a problem that had a solution but was never patented (or stolen ideas like the phone)
