Played a fourball at Parkstone a couple of weeks back, and it was a real treat. Bought the golf in a charity raffle. My three partners had not played the course, and i last played it in the 70's.

We had lunch before we started and the food was excellent. The clubhouse whilst modern had a friendly feel to it.

The course is not long by modern standards, but was presented in fantastic condition. A lot of flowering heather and gorse, which needed to be avoided at all costs.

The course had just held a large Invitational competition, and the greens were still running true and fast. Some of the best surfaces i have putted on this year.

The holes are very pretty and there are some stunning views over Poole harbour and Purbeck, especially from the elevated 16th tee.

There are quite a few blind shots, especially on the par fives. The par fours are also quite short, and most only needed a short iron in off a good drive. Only the 15th at over 400 yards up hill needed a longer iron. The fact i birdied the hole helped to make it my favourite !

A lot of the greens are raised and with flags on the front are difficult to get close to. With hindsight i would have played more three or five woods off the tee to leave a full shot in.

Knowing the course better would definately help scoring, although my partner and i had a better ball score of 50 points and still lost to a birdie on the last green ! The par off the yellows is 72, but at less than 6,000 yards the SSS is only 69.

I would fully recommend playing Parkstone, and sipping a well earned beer at the end of the day overlooking the beautiful course, is what golf is all about.

I have had a few good games at Parkstone - a very nice course with a good vibe that gives you a great chance to score well rather than get beaten up like you can on some others. Highly recommended and a lovely loction - some of the nicest real estate in the country.

If memory serves, wasn't Peter Alliss the pro there in the '60's. He is always mentioning the place.

I think his father was the pro there before him as well. Out of interest (?) Peter Alliss now plays at Hindhead, just up the road from me. Often see his Roller with PUT 3 number plate.

Peter Alliss was at Parkstone from 1957 to 1970 according to their website. May well have been at Ferndown. We have a reciprocal with Ferndown, which is also a lovely old traditional course.
