Its something i have never pondered or even thought about as its never been an option... but this week after 4 great games complete with good warm up sessions on the range, and around 4 midweek range sessions i had a weekend of golf booked.

2 good courses,
2 good groups of playing partners
what could go wrong,

Saturday, after a 6am start i arrived at the course in ascot at 8am, 2 buckets of balls (around 80 max) on their range and everything was normal and looking good, onto the course and after about 6 holes -8 holes the wheels fell off and although showing signs of coming back the golf never really clicked for the round.

Ok no biggy, playing sunday too, so maybe its just an off day.

onto sunday and they day was started on a downer, up at 7am, only to find texts on my phone that one of the group have dropped out.. now im only up 7am, because ive got to collect him from around 15miles away, then go via a range to collect a new bag and glove to be at the club we need to for 10am, now wide awake and having a bit of a strop, i think balls, im up so i may as well hit the range and work out yesturday's gremlins.

got the the range about 8:30, 2 buckets of balls later (around 100max) and the swing is back, the striking is good and im in a great place, off to course number 2, good breakfast and a but of banter and im ready for the game.

A nice par par start and im thinking all is good..... WALLOP!.. the golfing god send a bolt of lightening right up my backside and the known and trusted swing packs up and leaves town. ok the golf wasnt that bad, but it was just scruffy, even good shots began to feel more lucky fueled than because i actually planned them.

is it possible to be totally golfed out.

Yes, you have effectively played a round each time on the range hitting that many balls. As one of my old cricketing mates would have said " you have used all your good shots up"

I played Saturday and Sunday and played well both days... No balls hit before and no practice putts, (though that wouldn't have been a bad idea as i must have missed about 10 birdie puts from inside 10 feet over the weekend) just a few swings to warm up on the first tee. 76 gross Saturday (with 5 shanks on a short course 67) and 74 gross Sunday (no shanks this time on short course 68).

Try not bashing balls before you go out, maybe just a bit of chipping and a few putts and see how you get on.

Not really, but 100 range balls before playing is going to leave you less than fresh.

30 max for me. Enough to get loosened up, without wearing me out.

i think so!!!

i went through a few spells like this throughout the season,i'd be playing really well and looking forward to the weekend of competitive golf but when the time came it would fall apart.we do go through these spells and thebest we can do is ride it out.i'm sure everything will click into place.

I'm pretty fit and healthy but after 80+ range balls there is no way I'd be able to play decent golf on the course. Definitely too many for me pre-round.

The pros spend a fair amount of time on the range before a ruond, but tend to focus on quality not quantity. If you see them on TV, there's a lot of chatting with coaches etc between shots.

Over golfed?!? I was exhausted after just READING through your post - never mind actually hitting that many balls!

Using the range to work out niggles is something I do mid week between playing at the weekend. I rarely use a range to warm up as the temptation is to hit far too many balls and tire yourself out for the round - not just physically but mentally too.

that may explain why i always find half buckets of balls on the range about 8am, people obviously just used half a bucket to warm up then leave the rest.

Yes.Last year I played far too much golf, to the extent I decided to almost miss this season completely.I've played maybe a dozen games this year and enjoyed each one and I'm now looking forward to the turn of the year and playing more than I have this year.
I've also decided that being a member at a club is not for me.Part of the problem was getting bored with the course I was playing 2/3 times a week.Variety in courses and challenges is the way ahead.

To me, 'all golfed out' would mean not enjoying it because of playing too much so if you still enjoyed it then why not.

Having said that,I do think it's possible that so many balls before a round might not be a good idea.

I played the other Wednesday at Lefties gaff, the following Sunday and then again at Blackmoor the following Wednesday. 3 rounds in a week. It was enough for me.
Gave it a miss this week-end. Don't enjoy too much golf nowadays.

Imagine you can't afford to after the loses you incurred.:D

I played Saturday and Sunday this weekend and managed to get out again today.

After two absolute disasters on 1 and 2 and a bad front 9 I thought maybe I'd overdone it but then shot a best ever 9 of 42 on the back and changed my mind:)

I guess as long as you're enjoying it as a whole thats what counts.

Golfed out doesn't compute

I could and have played 7 days a week (redundancy does have some perks) and never once got bored. Mind you even I don't go and hit 80-100 balls before a round and limit it to around 20-30 these days. If I'm playing a different course I'm alaways up for it either to be an previous score or to see how well I can shoot. If I'm playing a lot at my own place I'll mix it up of the tee or purposely lay up on the longer par 4's etc and hit different clubs.

Twice this year I have played 11 rounds in 14 days. That was more than enough but I am useless at turning down invitations - it will be the death of me.

Definitely over golfed. Hitting that amount of balls then playing will take it out of you. Just getting a fraction tired can speed up your swing and throw your timing off, causing a fast downturn in your game. I was once told that one bad round is no worries two bad rounds in a row, no worries when you play three bad rounds in a row that is when you need to reassess and work on things.

I was coached to hit no more than 40 range balls in an hour. That's a ball every 1.5 minutes.

I think its good to go through a proper pre-shot routine and pause to take in exactly how the shot went. After a dozen, take a short break, sit down and think about the shots you just made.

I agree that after getting up early, driving around and hitting so many balls you were probably getting a little mentally tired.
