My set now comprises of regular shafted irons and stiff shafted woods. I naturally have a fast swing but consciously decided to go for regular on the irons in order to slow it down a bit supposedly for more consistency. So my swing thought is different depending on whether I have a wood or iron in my hand, sounds simple, but I keep forgetting to go easy on the irons and the result is usually a bit of a hook.
The problem is that having to think too much when I step up to the ball is distracting me from the shot in hand. Should I have gone for stiff shafts in the irons? or will it all work out in end so I can do this without thinking about it?

Are you hooking the stiff shafted woods as well or only the irons?
If you are only hooking the irons then it could be they are too soft a flex for you.
However if you are hooking both irons and woods then it sounds like a swing flaw that needs looked at.

I wasn't custom fitted for the woods but I hit them really well, im driving long and straight (last couple of rounds) as long as I commit to the shot with a fast swing.
Im also striking the ball well with the irons when I do a nice easy swing, it's just when i've ripped a big drive off the tee and the adrenalin is still pumping I lash out on the approach shot and thats when I get the hook which is costing me shots. I guess a big deep breath might do the trick.
I dont have a handicap yet as i've only just joined but my last 5 rounds were 91,84,84,88,85.

I've made quite a big deal on here lately about shafts, weights/flex/kick-point etc. For me, it's just a logical effort to minimise the worry about having un-matching gear. Having said this, by picking up bits and pieces over the last few months (see sig) I'm sure I have nothing too soft or too stiff for my swing.

I have played with all sorts and t.b.h. you should find that you get used to whatever you have, in time. My pros have always hit my irons in lessons and they never struggled with random hooks or weirdness. I have to be very careful not to hook short clubs, so I take a more neutral grip, especially when nervous or tense.

I think you need to be sure it's not you....working these things out can take a while though.

Having spent a number of weeks on changing my tempo from supersonic to one that lasts more than a nano second I know how hard it is to consistantly swing at a different spped. Mine is a process to produce one swing for all my clubs but if I'm honest having two separate swings based on woods or irons is just making life doubly hard. I think you need to decide whether regular or stiff is what suits you best and find something you can swing at one speed throughout the bag

I am borderline reg/stiff, and can hit either effectively. I can't see that there is that much difference between them, unless you need X flex. It is your swing, not the club.

Why are you lashing at approach shots? It is all about finesse.

Cheers for the advice guys. I think the reason im lashing at it a bit is just bacause I have had a long break from the game and until now I haven't taken into account that the ball doesn't go as far at this time of year. I've been coming up short a lot lately and rather than taking extra club i've been hitting it harder
In the summer id take a wedge from 150, im now taking a 9 or 8 so maybe I should from now on say a 7 or 8 iron and swing it nice and easy.

To me this sounds like a recipe for disaster, whenever you are thinking i'll swing this one like this and that one like that, you are thinking to much and that will cost you.

It would make more sense to say I hook my irons so aim right and play for it,

I don't think it's your clubs either unless you've had your swingspeed measured and know for sure that you're swinging driver at 110mph+ every time. I have a reasonable swingspeed (need an Xflex driver) but can play just fine with regular shafted irons.

I don't think that taking an extra club and swinging easy is the answer either, we all have out swing tempo's and we should stick to them in my opinion. When you start swinging easy it upsets that natural rythm and lets your hands and body have too much time to wander off and do something totally unexpected - eg: shut the clubface like a door :)

Yes you are right that you probably are playing to your 'summer yardages' so you need to simply trust that an 8-iron is cool from 150yds and hit it as you normally would, if it flies the green then tell yourself to hit a decent 9-iron instead from that range.

I'd probably say for sure that if I hooked a shot it would be my swing to blame :)

I can safely say my swing speed is over 110 with the driver maybe it I have to come to terms with the fact that there is a swing fault somewhere. I must just add that the hook I am talking about is generally no more than 5-10 yards left of the target, so if it becomes persistant I will begin to allow for it and aim right.
