Here i was standing at the first tee yesterday, first counter of the season, full of verve and vim and i do admit a bit of a swagger.

Playing off 18 and have a target of 12 for the end of the season, first drive pulled left into the waste ground, a decent lie, leaving 188 yards over some trees and a bunker to the centre of the green, 5 iron in hand, caught it well and landed just short but no trouble, chipped to four feet and missed the putt, no worries net par......then the wheels came off, lost three balls at the next and walked off with a ten!!! that included three shanks (SOrry i said the S word)
next four holes were 6-6-6-6 standing on the 6th 8 over handicap par, 10 over handicap at the turn. finished 18 13 over par 102 - 18 = Nett 84, this included 9 penalty shots and at least the same in shanks.

It could have been so much worse if i didnt scramble as well, i had at least 5 or 6 chip and putts for double bogey!!

I was scratching my head as i have been playing really well lately and it wasnt scorecard in the hand syndrome as i had been playing winter medals.

When you get the shanks (oops i said it again) its hard to get rid and when i did i was pulling everything left.

Hope your first medals went better than mine!!

Any tips for the driving range to stop the shanks would be greatly appreciated.

Im going to spend a few hours there after work to try to sort this one quick.

Just as well on this showing i wasnt the break 80 winner as it would have been a big job for GM

When I had a touch of the unmentionables, it was down to excess body movement. I found that planting myself down and just creating a full turn of the shoulders at a 75% rate helped massively. Just keep yourself planted down through impact and not come up and out of it

Like you I'm happy NOT to be at Gainsborough today as I might just have killed someone if they stood to the right of me as I hit a ball!

I have suddenly started shhhhhh...ing and for me it's (I think - lesson tomorrow) that I have started to sway a little on the backswing and I'm not getting my weight through properly. End result is I cast from the top and the club head travels outside the ball and hey presto the hosel gets acquainted with the ball. I found yesterday that if I thought about my triceps being close to my rib cage through the down swing it worked and the middle of the club was suddenly in use - hallefliipinglujah!

There are of course many reasons for the unmentionables so good luck in eradicating the blighters at the range.

Thanks for the advice, i know everyone is different, i was playing it through my head and i think i may have been leaning slightly forward as i remember a few times that i was off balance when the shhhh happened.

I will go down the range later and give an update....or maybe i will have some pings for sale like new but slightly marked hosels :D

Well i snuck off to the range for 1/2 an hour on my lunch and after two shanks i realised i was getting disconnected and you could get a beach ball between my body and arms, tried the old towel under the armpit trick and BINGO out of the face. why is it that out on the course it never fixes but on the range you seem to get it right within a few shots.

Will go to the range later in the week and see if it still works, if so break 80 here i come (hopefully :)

That's what I could see on camera in my swing so keeping triceps and rib cage sort of connected worked so hopefully we're both on the right lines
