We play a lot of team golf in the winter months at our club and a popular version is a Bowmaker. Normally a team of 4 comp with 2 to count per hole.

We were discussing there the name came from as it appears to be in common use but nobody knew.

Anyone got any idea what the origin of the name was?

Don't know the origin but we do it this way. Much more pressure.

  • 4 Players - Best 2, 3 then 4 scores each hole
For this format of competition, players play in teams of four. For the first six holes, the best two scores from the four players count for each hole. For holes 7 to 12, the best three scores from the four players count for each hole. For the last six holes, scores from all four players count for each hole.

There are lots of variations - we also do a waltz version. 2 to count on par 5s, 3 on par 4s and 4 on par 3s.

All good fun

someone over there may know a ways better than me

but wondering if it's a nod back in history to scotland when the clubs first made of 'wood'
& back in history some 300+ years or so the first club makers were originally bow-makers

[h=3]The Former Pro Event Named 'Bowmaker Tournament'[/h]Also note that for nearly 15 years, ending in 1971, golfers on the precursor to the European Tour had a tour stop in England that was named "Bowmaker Tournament" or "Bowmaker Cup." The event was a pro-am that usually took place at Sunningdale. It was played from 1957 through 1971 and among its champions were Bobby Locke, Peter Thomson, Kel Nagle, Bob Charles and Peter Oosterhuis. Visit the Wikipedia page on the tournament for more info.
