Journeyman Pro
So it was my first ever club championship yesterday, missed last years as I had family visiting. 36 holes in 30 degree heat was exactly what I thought it would be.....knackering! Got a great tan though.
Morning round was half decent, were it not for a sloppy 4th and 5th holes I'd have come in with a PB for sure. I shot 90 gross which I was pretty happy with but the pair of 8's I shot on the par 5 4th and the par 3 3rd put to rest any hope I had of breaking 90 in competition (that's my goal for the year). I play off 18 and it's a par 71 but when it comes to stroke play comps I struggle. The new steeper swing I have been working on with my pro was working well, but due to the bad couple of holes I finished the front 9 with a 51. Then came the back 9 where I found some form and played out of my skin. Gross 39, driving well, approach shots were close, short game was bang on the money and I was draining some outrageous putts (the strongest part of my game). 10 through 14 I was -1 gross.
After a spot of lunch and a quick drink we set out for the afternoon round which I just shouldn't have bothered with. Started really badly through the first 5 holes, driver was still going well but from then on what happened was a complete mystery, duff's, shanks, and thins! Managed to gather my thoughts after 5 and make a few pars but a horrible 9 on the par 3 11th ultimately killed me. I picked it up a bit from 13 through to the end of the round, a second par of the day on the very long par 4 16th and finishing with a par on the 18th but the 6 really bad holes I had gave me a nasty gross 99. My head went on the 4th, my heart went on the 11th, my legs finally packed up and stopped working on the 15th and my arms gave in on 18. I walked off completely dead, a little burnt, very tired and gasping for a drink even though I had consumer about 10 bottles during the day!
Today, luckily, I don't have any work booked in so I can relax, my legs are absolutely killing me and the thought of going to play golf makes me feel sick! Lol. I'll be back out there next Sunday as always....that is of course if my legs decide to join the party any time soon.
