So it was my first ever club championship yesterday, missed last years as I had family visiting. 36 holes in 30 degree heat was exactly what I thought it would be.....knackering! Got a great tan though.

Morning round was half decent, were it not for a sloppy 4th and 5th holes I'd have come in with a PB for sure. I shot 90 gross which I was pretty happy with but the pair of 8's I shot on the par 5 4th and the par 3 3rd put to rest any hope I had of breaking 90 in competition (that's my goal for the year). I play off 18 and it's a par 71 but when it comes to stroke play comps I struggle. The new steeper swing I have been working on with my pro was working well, but due to the bad couple of holes I finished the front 9 with a 51. Then came the back 9 where I found some form and played out of my skin. Gross 39, driving well, approach shots were close, short game was bang on the money and I was draining some outrageous putts (the strongest part of my game). 10 through 14 I was -1 gross.

After a spot of lunch and a quick drink we set out for the afternoon round which I just shouldn't have bothered with. Started really badly through the first 5 holes, driver was still going well but from then on what happened was a complete mystery, duff's, shanks, and thins! Managed to gather my thoughts after 5 and make a few pars but a horrible 9 on the par 3 11th ultimately killed me. I picked it up a bit from 13 through to the end of the round, a second par of the day on the very long par 4 16th and finishing with a par on the 18th but the 6 really bad holes I had gave me a nasty gross 99. My head went on the 4th, my heart went on the 11th, my legs finally packed up and stopped working on the 15th and my arms gave in on 18. I walked off completely dead, a little burnt, very tired and gasping for a drink even though I had consumer about 10 bottles during the day!

Today, luckily, I don't have any work booked in so I can relax, my legs are absolutely killing me and the thought of going to play golf makes me feel sick! Lol. I'll be back out there next Sunday as always....that is of course if my legs decide to join the party any time soon.

But at least you completed and were able to post a final score, Ive known some guys who just give up after 18 holes, makes me wonder why they entered in the first place.
Our Club Champs are in mid September with 36 holes, cant wait!

One of the chaps in my 3 ball almost jacked it in after 27 holes but we managed to persuade him to continue, think he regretted it though as he was probably the most knackered looking person in the clubhouse afterwards, after sitting down for 20 minutes he decided to get up and almost fell over....which got a big laugh.

It really was a hard slog and something I won't rush to do again, 27 for captains day a couple of months ago was hard enough, yesterday was just torture. We did get a small storm and a quick downpour at the start of our second round which was really refreshing but it didn't last long and within half an hour the humidity and heat was kicking our backsides again.

You did far better than me, in fact 33 holes better than me as I walked off after 3 holes of our CC qualifier!

...and one might ask whether they should be allowed to enter next year. I think if you sign up for a 36 hole comp you really commit to that and to playing 36 holes. Smacks of a bit of lack of consideration for the other two guys in your 3 ball - and what happens if two of your three were to not bother for the 2nd round.

Have to agree with that, there ended up being a few 2 balls in the afternoon round of our Club Champs Saturday where people had got the hump with their morning rounds and gone home. My group ended up Sandwiched between a pair of such 2 balls that started the days 3's. If your injured then pull out, but if it's just because you annoyed at how you played then I think you should suck it up and just carry on.

May i be so bold as to ask why you walked in ? as per another thread its better to ask why the round wasnt completed before passing judgement

Basically I was having a mare, I was not in the frame of mind to continue or get my score back plus I felt that I was hampering my playing partners so I shot the craw and jacked it!

A few dropped out after 18 in our Club champs yesterday also.

A couple were genuine injuries and could hardly play 18 but tried and had to give up, a couple from the heat and were feeling unwell and a few from having a mare and deciding not to carry on.

I got round the second 18 but was definitely feeling it and when I got up this morning I stuggled!

One of the juniors who is off 3 and plays in the mens comps was telling me that as well as 36 holes yesterday in our championships, he has 36 today and tomorrow (playing a junior open and a county game) two 18 hole comps Wednesday and Thursday and then 36 holes Friday in another open he has entered!

Oh to be 16 again.

I've felt like it especially last week after a bogey, double, double, treble start. But I use the rest of the round as a practice to sort out my game for the next time.

yes those were the days, we'd do 36 a day, sometimes more in the height of summer............balls bouncing down hard fairways, shorts everyday, jumpers for goalposts, carrying your bag and a mars bar for lunch

good honest answer craw , fair play , dont think i have ever done that or would do that tho ,
was 13 over after 8 in this years captains , stayed out there & played the last 10 in 3 over, 16 over total .. ... signed the card & even typed it in to the computer & signed for 18 over, DOH, never checked & the guy marking my card had me down for a 6 on the par 3 i had a 4 on
A lesson learned , but at least it was on a rubbish card

i did finish after 10 the day i came back after my holidays , was only 5 over but my left instep has gotten burned on holidays & it was just too uncomfortable .. i told the guys before we started i had a sore foot & would see how it goes .. prob shouldnt have played but was mad for a game so went ahead .....

I have not put in an NR for over 15 years and this year I had two in two weeks. It sort of reflects my state of mind however I would normally hand in 100+ before I NR.

But yes, I was quite proud of myself from getting through all 36 holes and posting a score, especially as I'm not the fittest of people.

Fair play to you sticking out and posting a score. Least you had a great 9 holes.
. I completed our 36 cc on Saturday and played awful 96 , 91 off 10, now 11 best I could manage was 6 half decent holes. Worn out but deep down despite being gutted it was great to play 2 rounds with course dry and playable and sun out not happened much this year.

our club championship is played over 2 days and is cat 1 only, what is the point of a cat3 player entering a best gross comp
I thought this too but ours has extra competitions, best net over 2 rounds and gross stroke over 14 handicap so still stuff to play for no matter how good you are. It was just good to be apart of the day, our touring pro turned up (just finished tied 60th at the Open, his first major), the pro was out with his iPad taking scores down and giving a running leaderboard, all the scores were up on the TV so you could see who was leading...it was a good crack.
