One Day World Record

It's all about providing entertainment for the spectators.

As an extreme example if the opening batsman hits each of the first six balls for six the crowd go wild and look forward to the rest of the day.

If the opening bowler were to take a wicket with each of his first six deliveries the crowd go wild and then start to think that their day at the cricket is likely to be a short one.

It is and always has been a batsman's game.

totally and utterly disagree, the balance in the batsmans favour has never been this much.

are you telling me it was a batsmans game on damp uncovered tracks, with a matchstick weight 2lb2 bat, no helmet, no thigh pad, pimpled gloves?

more a case of the modern fan having the attention span of a gnat and not understanding the finer points of the game but hey ho

(btw the making bats bigger and boundaries smaller could easily be compared to bigger driver heads and bigger holes - would that be more entertaining too???)

There are now restrictions on the depth of bat faces.

And crowds have always been more attracted to batsmen rather than bowlers and the rule makers recognise that. Without the crowds and TV viewers the game will cease to exist.

When I played in my school days I was a very capable off spinner - to the point where I sometimes opened the bowling!

I got tonked for the occasional six but not often. These days I’d be mince meat.

The way the bats are now made, mega compressed, makes the difference. The ball booms off the bat now. Sooooo many sweet spots on bats now.

Modern bats are actually pressed less. Pressing them less and drying them out more allows greater volume without the weight increase.

There's more science around the shaping etc too that I'm not familiar with, but they're definitely not more pressed than they used to be :)

I'm either out of date or misheard / incorrectly understood a chat on TMS a while ago about bats. Happy to be corrected.

Whatever they do the ball flies off the bat now, off more areas of the bat as well.

It surprised me to be honest but makes sense when you think about it from a size / weight perspective.

As someone who relied more on timing when playing would have loved to have a biff with one of the newer weapons :)

The biggest challenge I found when borrowing a bat from my son was judging the pace of the ball off the bat on defensive shots.

something in the pitch, decent contest between bat and ball and an intriguing 200 a side game. something for the quicks early, bit of spin, some reverse swing, give me this over 400 a side on the M1 every day of the week

top class from Buttler, played superbly especially in the situation (his first 50 today was slower than 4 of his 5 previous tons!!!)

10 needed 9 down

This was very much me as well back in the day. My son played for a little while and one time I went with him to the nets to help him practice for a trial. I used his bat, just below full size, and could not believe how well the ball came off it. Nudges for 1 would now have broken through the infield for 2-3. A timed shot would have flown for 4 instead of a run 3 or possible 4. You would still get out the same but I am convinced the runs accumulated whilst there would have been much greater.

That was a brilliant innings from Buttler , one of the best for England in an ODI

Play golf with this guy occasionally in County games, very nice fellow https://www.woodstockcricket.co.uk/about/the-bat-making-process

theyve only brought the ropes in about 30 yards at Edgbaston for the T20 lol, road of a deck, expect it will be entertaining, not so sure it will be cricket haha

But that's the core sentiment of T20 anyway. It was brought in to be crash bang wallop and entertain so don't see it's anything different. Boundaries are often in at T20 games

does that make it right? you happy to see a sport utterly devalued? existing fans completely marginalised for a dumbed down version?

how would you feel if half the golf tournies on tv were played on short courses with 6 inch bucket holes? how much live golf would you watch and be interested in then?

probably about as much as cricket fans are watching this farce

Balance - test cricket still has it place and it’s still there for the hardcore cricket fans but cricket as with most sports needed to evolve to attract newer fans because cricket isn’t going to survive as a top level sport with just a hardcore of fans

The white formats are great entertainment and fun - there are still high levels of skill involved both with the bat and the ball and should be applauded just the same with red ball cricket.

I fortunately, cricket as only a test sport wasn’t likely to survive. The ashes obviously still gets great audiences but there are plenty of tomes the grounds have been less than half full. Maybe it is because fans are bored of the format, or maybe it’s beciase more people can’t afford to take days off to watch a whole 5 days.

it still has its place, but has to evolve to keep people interested.

Golf is completely different, at least the US anyway, it has big enough support financially so doesn’t need to change its format. But, as has been spoken about on here, the lesser tours are trying gimmicks out currently to see if they can find one that will increase their popularity.
