Ole,Ole,Ole,Ole!!!!!

Aye, a good move there. he has determination and drive and also a shrewd mind. Good choice for the match over the pond in 2012 :D

I thought it was already decided, or was that just Monty exercising royal perogative?
Good choice though and it brings the propect of Miguel as a future Captain a little closer.

A good choice but I wonder if he'll have the same depth of passion as Monty or Seve. He'll definitely have more than Faldo (my dead budgie cared more about the RC than he did) but I wonder about not really playing competitively anymore whether he'll be able to judge everything that is going on

I agree when he was captain homer, but as a player he was quality.

Why is there all this fixation about the Captain having to play competitively? We all think we know who should be picked and how they should play and some of us don't know what end of a golf bat to hold.

Surely watching and speaking to others is enough, let's face it how many times was Monty playing on the last two days of a tournament and if he was, how many times was he playing with the guys who qualified for the Ryder Cup? :D

Shark

Best thing is Olly won't drone on and on about it for 2 years like Monty, he'll just pick a team and get on with it a couple of months before the event. He won't make it about himself either, he'll give the players credit if they play well and take the blame if they lose - a proper captain.

Monty's Major? - never heard such trollop in all my life!

Birdieman, all I ever heard Monty do was heap lavish praise on his team and constantly saying the win was not down to him but all down the his fine team..........did I watch a different Ryder Cup to you? :D

Maybe, but do you think he meant it?
Sorry Dodger I just don't have any time for him, he's a selfish character who isn't genuine imo, things are done for his benefit, not others. Appreciate others like him but he's the type who looks down his nose at ordinary folk, that's why I don't like him.
To me he made so much more of the Captaincy than need be, look at Bernhard Langer, perfect example of a Captain for me, everything done perfectly with no hysteria or BS, respected by all.

It wasn't a sham, he was genuinely delighted for his players and himself. I felt he was going on about his team selection and blowing his own trumpet over a year before the event which was unnescessary, it felt like because his own golf had gone south his only way of getting himself in the papers and on tv was to bleat on about the RC when he didn't need to.
His captaincy at the event itself was fine, no problem with that but he's back in the media already saying he's going to play at Gleneagles etc which is just egotistical.
You wouldn't see Fergie holding the European Cup for all the photos, you'd see the players holding the trophy and the manager standing back.
Also Europe lost 3 of the 4 sessions so rather than saying Monty's captaincy was great you could ask, one session apart, why it hadn't gone so well.
RC is pure luck, who's putting well and is playing best on any given day, Captain has little to do with it in many ways.
Really didn't like the Monty's Major headlines, he couldn't win one so won't go down as a great, that grates him......seemed like he'd like to use the RC to make out he had won a major. Tony Jacklin, Bernhard Gallacher, Seve, Langer, Woosnam didn't seem to soak it up as a personal triumph unlike Monty...imo ;)

Sorry bit of a waffle there.

Jacklin didn't seem to soak it up as a personal triumph???!!

Yer having a laugh with this point!Naw,not much.....he still bleats on about it!

RC is pure luck, can't agree with that either.

Jacklin didn't need to, holding the Open and US Open titles at the same time was more than enough to define him as a great champion.

Jacklin made out that the RC was another major every time he won,I reckon he thinks it was him alone that makes the RC what it is today. The man is without doubt a fine champion but is also a grade A warmer.

Kinel...every captain is different, thank goodness. I though Monty done a good job, a really good job. I thought he was sincere and had the backing from all his players and his interviews throughout were fairly balanced. I like his emotion and it's too easy to forget how good a golfer he is/was.

Great appointment...much harder job leading the team in the US but can only have gained from being Faldos vice captain.

I agree with Birdieman that Monty hyped the Ryder Cup up from about 18 months out probably to hide the decline in his own game as much as anything else, recently saying it cost him 400 places in the world rankings.Interesting to see how he goes next season but in my opinion his best days are behind him.
That said, apart from picking Paddy I couldn't fault his captaincy at the actual event. Will go down as a true Ryder Cup great....
