Oil Prices

The last time crude oil prices were this low we were paying about 65p a litre for petrol. Even allowing for tax increases we should be paying around 75p a litre now. We're meant to be happy with fuel at under £1, well we damn well shouldn't be.

Think about petrol or diesel at £1 per litre. 80% of that price is tax which means that the oil companies are managing to explore and find oil/gas, drill to get it put of the ground, pipe it ashore, refine it and deliver it to the petrol station for 20p per litre. All of that work and it's cheaper than milk and to get that you just squeeze a cow.

I hope that Tarkus1212's unhappiness is aimed at the government and not the oil companies.

If only it was so simple. The cheapest oilfield in the North Sea is pulling oil out at a cost of $18 dollars a barrel, and there's little margin after that for everyone else in the supply chain. Most platforms are pulling oil at between €40 and €65 dollars a barrel.

To pull at €40 and sell at €31 suggests they're making a loss.

I believe the latest figures are £34 and rising [quite fast!]
