Monthly Stableford today.

Didn't have to wait on the first - Hurrah!
Waited on the 2nd......
and the 3rd......
and the 4th..Getting the picture here...?
Never quite close enough to "force" through on the tee but always waiting.
We finally got through on the 7th - great... 2 1/2 holes later and we're waiting again.
And we waited all the way round......

Couldn't get any sort of rhythm going - still played some cracking shots but some dodgy ones too. Standing around for 5 minutes makes it very easy to lose concentration and then it's tricky to get it back. Finished in 3 1/2 hours - not bad 3 ball pace. Trouble is we were a 2 ball........
And Fragger did me 37-34...again.........

I reckon, one day, I'm going to play as slowly as I possibly can, take as long as I possibly can and annoy as many people as possible to let them know how it feels.
The last 4 rounds at my place have involved waiting on most holes........

Where's my 12-Bore........
 
I have the same trouble if I run into a log jam. Loose rhythm and concentration. I can be playing great but if I am waiting to play the next shot 5 or 10 mins until the group ahead are out of range I can easily than go and top it 50 yards (or sometimes less) !!

Playing in a pairs knock out the other night and everyone else was also trying to get their matches completed before the deadline - trouble was they were all 2 balls so mindful of not holding everyone up we let 5 (YES FIVE) pairs through. Trouble was we just hung around for ever. It really messed with my game and we didn't win any holes in the middle part of the match. As the jam cleared my game picked up and after being 3 down with 3 to play we drew level on the 18th:whoo:

Ended up going to play off holes and at our club the rule is these are played in sets of 3 not sudden death. Got to 21 holes all square and it was 9.55 pm ( started at 4.30!!) so after 5 and a half hours play we are having to play the next set of 3 on another day. Narked off about that to be honest as we had em on the run I reckon.
 
On the front 9 we were behind a 4 ball who are notorious for not letting anyone through, but we got through on the 7th when one of their party hooked a ball into the long stuff.

The real problem came on the back 9.

As we approached the 9th green, we could see a group starting on the 10th, (It looked like a society with 2 tee starts) (Why book a society in on Comp day Morning ?)

they had just teed off by the time we got there, and we literally waited on each shot after that.
They werent even playing properly, they were dropping extra balls 100 yards from some greens and trying to hit said green WHILE WE WERE WAITING!!

They had opportunities to call us through on several holes, but especially the 13th when they were looking for a ball and totally ignored us.

GRRR anyway back to the Golf, I shafted Imurg again, so everythings OK :)

Went round in 90, left so many out there its bonkers, will break 90 in a comp one day soon
Driving was very solid, putting was good , it was 2nd shots that let me down

You're complaining about 3 1/2 hours for a 2 ball?
Lots of folk can only dream of such a quick round.
The last time I played a medal on a Saturday we went round as a 2 ball in 4 hrs 45 mins and the guy I was playing with was off 6 so we weren't exactly hacking it round.
 
The problem isnt one of "How much time it took to get round" as 3 1/2 hours is an acceptable time, no problems there, its more about having your playing rhythm destroyed, by having to wait for a group of numpties who have no idea of the game and its ettiquette.

We could have been through and away in a couple of minutes and as the course in front was clear, this added to the frustration.

Im sure the delays contributed to some duffed shots, but thats my own mental failure to deal with it

3.5 hrs! We can only dream of 3.5 hrs.

4.5hrs is the norm here for anything, 2 or 3 ball, during comps on any of the courses you'll be lucky to be less than 4 hours 45mins!!!!!!
 
When we played in Turkey a few weeks ago we had booked to play Carya GC on the Friday morning at 11.00am. We arrived at just after 10 to have a quick drink and a warm up.
Went down to the 1st tee and there was a big televised competition going off, it was jam packed. We spoke to the starter, who initially apologised and suggested we tee off from the 10th.
There were 16 of us in total, 3 of the first 4 ball had teed off and as the last in the group stepped onto the tee, the starter came round and said that we had to let the first group go out, and the rest of us should make our way back to the 1st and wait for the last two groups in the competition to go out.
We weren't too happy as we were all on holiday together and wanted to play the course together, but for the sake of an easy life agreed to the request.
The 12 of us walked back to the 1st, and sure enough there were still two groups of 4 to go out, so we waited. And waited. And waited. I swear to God, none of these guys had ever picked up a club in their lives. All 8 of them topped it off the 1st tee, some air shots thrown in for good measure. We couldn't believe it!
We could see what was coming.....
It took us just under 2 hours to play the first 4 holes, by which time we were livid. The starter came down to the tee, as did a couple of marshalls. There was no way we were going to ever get this bloody round finished without somebody getting a 3 iron smashed over their head.
The fourball in front were hacking it around, waiting for the green to clear when they were never going to get anywhere near it, and then when they decided to play each of them took half a dozen practice swings before nobbing the ball 50 yards along the ground.
The scorecard stated that if a marshall thought that somebody was not up to the standard the course expected they had the right to get them off the course. Why was nothing being done about these prats in front????
We were then asked to get in our buggies, drive up to the 11th or 12th hole to get in front of the competition and come back later to play 5, 6, 7, 8. 9 and 10!!
Feck that.
We went back on Monday and played it in peace and quiet after receiving a refund.
It was the only day during the week we had problems.

That story is actually a (relatively) good one as the club recognised there were problems and did something about it - just didn't quite get it right first time!

Real key is to have Marshalls and to allow them to/insist that they do the job. Any group can get out of position or lose a hole because of a couple of wayward shots or a lost ball. However, if the gap widens, then they need to be TOLD to let the following group through - no ifs/buts.

I tend to carry a phone in my bag for emergency use anyway - and consider this sort of incident to be an appropriate situation to ring the Pro-Shop to request something be done about it. I don't do it often and I always prefix it by saying that it might not be the group immediately in front that is the cause.

It's not slow play that is the problem, it's the non-adherence to etiquette that is. I don't have a major problem with a slightly slow pace of play - many of my best rounds have been in this situation. I just don't like having a group up my backside all the time - adds to my tension!
 
I love standing around waiting on the course it means there is plenty of time for those nasty thoughts to get into my head and properly f**k me up!!
 
Its interesting to hear of other peoples woes about waiting on a course it really does drive you nuts and the pros dont help or set a good example by faffing around either. But at least they get penalised sometimes (1 shot penalty for Ross Fisher)

The truth is all courses are different and play at different speeds. Mine for example takes a good 4.5 hours in a comp off the whites due to its sheer length and walks between certain holes and everyone knows that. When you get visitors and theve paid a green fee etc its hard for marshalls and pro shops to tell them to get on with it as they dont like the backlash. Whether they be good or bad golfers some seem to have no idea where to leave their bags off the green, how long to look for a ball, when to call someone thru and mark cards etc. You can a be a slow player but get a move on and be aware of others on the course between shots! More effort should be made to make people aware of getting on with it as it seems to be a major problem with a lot of courses as golf becomes more popular. I am not looking forward to my Club Championships next month as I have been out there for 6 hours in the past!!! Needed a bloody minors lamp and nearly ordered a take away at one point!!!
 
I had the opposite yesterday evening.

Played on my own and made it through 3 groups by the 7th hole. Caught up with alot of traffic by the 9th and called it a day.

My biggest gripe was the fact that our group of 16 had booked our visit up in September of last year. We had the 1st tee booked from 11.00am. Why the hell did the club allow a competition to take our slot over????
 
We recently played Portstewart on our holiday and we were 5HRS 10 coming of the 16th green 3 of us had had enough by then and walked of,the rest of the guys played on and were 5HRS 40,it is a joke to be honest ,it was like that all week never a round under 5hrs.
