It should give everyone a chance of winning. Again, if the system gives players a chance to be in the top eight, one of them is going to be the winner.
It doesnt follow that the chance of being in the top eight translates to an equal chance of being the winner.

If I can put words in the lower hcs mouths it is "We want an equal chance of winning. We are not happy to have instead a higher chance of being in the top ten, but a lower chance of winning".

EG has misread the room that this consequence of WHS, whatever its other merits, would be accepted.

Sorry I’ll rephrase then and say “fair or equal” Chance which is what I initially said
"Fair" and "equal" are not really the same thing.

As explained by Golf Australia in the report I quoted last week, for low handicappers, the flip side of having an equal chance of winning is having a significant advantage when it comes to finishing in the prizes. True fairness only comes from balancing the chance of achieving these (and other) outcomes.

So which do you want - fair or equal?

I have no idea why this equals 'true fairness'.
A winner is usually described in the singular without saying 'and all you others did jolly well'.

It's a bit more of the I say you chaps we will tell you plebs what's good for you but we're not going to let the rabble in to our comps, do as we say not as we do.

I’m a bit confused by this analogy. Who are the ‘plebs’ and who are the ‘rabble’ who are unable to play in ‘our comps’?

Interesting thread. I haven't been in for a while, but I see there has been a significant change for the better, so I thought I'd pop back and see what was keeping it alive. Not a lot, apparently.

Anyway, why all the angst, the arguments seem to be about winning some tinpot board comp, a board that nobody but the winner is ever going to look at, nobody ever does, I can't even be bothered to look for my name.

I'm willing to bet that more than half the members at my club have no idea who the club champion is, and he won the pre-eminent scratch competition.

It seems to me that if you want glory, go and win some scratch events. Handicaps are there so my high handicap mates can give me a good hiding, take a pound off me and revel in their glory. And I'm happy for them.

If you want glory, then stop taking golf so seriously and become a very erratic player.
Don't practice very much and don't spend too much time and money seeking those "perfect" clubs.
Play golf for "fun" and enjoy.
But if you don't see yourself as a "glory hunter" then try to be the best golfer you can be for its own satisfaction.
The latter is the course I have always been on and I choose to remain in that camp.

Very fortunately, I have my name on several board comps for nett comps and twice club scratch champion and three times scratch knockout champion.
I've had more than my "fair" share - maybe.

Although I feel no need to seek further "glory", I am concerned about the dwindling interest in club comps from the lower handicap players at my club.

No....have never had divisions, and been playing vet's for 15 years, and now 71 years old,
I give some guys over 40 shots.
How many guys do you have at your club (number or proportion) who have handicaps of, lets say,...higher than 36?

Out of 403 golfers we just have 2 guys above 40, a further 4 above 36 and then 45 more of 28 or above.

Played in a vet's competition today and shot 6 over par, not good enough to make the top ten....
am very gutted.
Are we supposed to assume +6 gross should be a winning score for you?
You were playing off 4 last week.
What's a scratch comp ?????
thought everything was nett stableford now.
Then why tell us your gross score?

71 year old chap shoots 6 over par.
Very worthy of mentioning on this forum.
I wonder whether he beat his 8th best and got a cut. Very well done if he did.

What's your handicap!?

If you play off 15, I feel your pain. If you play off +2, then 6 over gross was a poor day, you didn't deserve to be in the Top 10 (albeit, not knowing how big the field was is another unknown, might feel more sorry for you if the field was 11 compared to if it was 100)

Age is irrelevant when you are talking about the position you finished in the field. Gross score is irrelevant, unless you know the players handicap. Nett score is much more useful (and Par of course if it was medal)
